I've been attempting to use MS's AI to do some very light research for a project.

It is just like an 8th grader who didn't do the homework but thinks he can BS his way through with a lot of random nonsense wrapped in "Great question!" and "So many factors to consider ...."

Frankly, I'm much better at that than it is, although it does have the edge on speed.

CoPilot can search open access journals. Asking for peer reviewed sources on a topic can get you started. Then ask it to summarize.

I feel like the core problem with AI adoption is trust. Not really a lack of trust because it screws up a fair amount. A lack of trust because the same companies pushing it already have spent the last decade or more scooping up everyone's data, making even casual users get turned off from them. Now they basically want us to hand MORE data to them so some "analytical model" can do "mysterious shit" with it.

Also, at least in the US, doing all this at a time when authoritarian extremists are rapidly trying to rise to power and openly pushing that they want to use these tools to root out people they don't like.

Like even if we trusted Microsoft and Google before, we still don't trust some 3rd party not to swoop in and snatch up all pur secrets from our documents and photos we let these things access.

Its just, a shit storm of "no way" on the trust.

I'm sure CoPilot can do many things. My suggestions for it all seem to involve sucking, blowing, or kissing.
It won't do any of those things, its a prude.

Sure, why not. Waste the time of librarians and research assistants everywhere. They've got nothing better to do, right?

Never heard of the Journal of International Relief or the International Humanitarian Digital Repository? That’s because they don’t exist.

But that’s not stopping some of the world’s most popular artificial intelligence models from sending users looking for records such as these, according to a new International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) statement.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot and other models are befuddling students, researchers and archivists by generating “incorrect or fabricated archival references,” according to the ICRC, which runs some of the world’s most used research archives.
(Scientific American has asked the owners of those AI models to comment.)
Why not ask the models to provide those comments? Should at least be entertaining.

Yuck.

The Washington Post has used AI to build a pick-your-own-format news podcast, letting listeners choose the topics, hosts and length to create custom versions.

“Your Personal Podcast” is available to registered users on the Post’s mobile app, starting today. The goal behind the AI-powered podcast is to give The Post’s audience more ways to access its journalism, in a “flexible way,” said Bailey Kattleman, The Washington Post’s head of product and design.
Did you know The Washington Post had a head of product and design?

Did you also know The Washington Post was once a respected news organization?

It's hard for me to label the guy who started the largest book seller in the world a tech bro, despite what his companies have been involved with since. But I'll bend to that nonsense.

Free, typing in Google search: How to tell Google AI to fuck off?

AI Overview: While directly telling a language model to "fuck off" will not have an emotional impact, using profanity can trigger the AI's safety protocols and prevent an "AI Overview" from appearing in Google Search results.

Not this time...
