Pete Hegseth's Department of War has christened its very own AI (noted at war.gov...), for the purpose of apparently making the U.S. military "more efficient and impactful" at ways of killing people and such. The problem is, it's just a regular old AI (Google's Gemini) dressed in military garb, and has to rely on the current amalgam of internet knowledge as to things like what military actions are considered DoD (oops, DoW) policy and can be considered legal.

This could be good though.

Milotary: "War Google, shoukd I murder more people in the desert?"

War Google": "I'm sorry, I can't discuss topics such as murder, suicide, or sex."

Anthropic Exec Forces AI Chatbot on Gay Discord Community, Members Flee

A Discord community for gay gamers is in disarray after one of its moderators and an executive at Anthropic forced the company’s AI chatbot on the Discord, despite protests from members.

Users voted to restrict Anthropic's Claude to its own channel, but Jason Clinton, Anthropic’s Deputy Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and a moderator in the Discord, overrode them. According to members of this Discord community who spoke with 404 Media on the condition of anonymity, the Discord that was once vibrant is now a ghost town. They blame the chatbot and Clinton’s behavior following its launch.

Google AI summaries are ruining the livelihoods of recipe writers: ‘It’s an extinction event’
Over the past few years, bloggers who have not secured their sites behind a paywall have seen their carefully developed and tested recipes show up, often without attribution and in a bastardized form, in ChatGPT replies. They have seen dumbed-down versions of their recipes in AI-assembled cookbooks available for digital downloads on Etsy or on AI-built websites that bear a superficial resemblance to an old-school human-written blog. Their photos and videos, meanwhile, are repurposed in Facebook posts and Pinterest pins that link back to this digital slop.
Recipe writers have no legal recourse because recipes generally are not copyrightable. Although copyright protects published or recorded work, they do not cover sets of instructions (although it can apply to the particular wording of those instructions).

Without this essential IP, many food bloggers earn their living by offering their work for free while using ads to make money. But now they fear that casual users who rely on search engines or social media to find a recipe for dinner will conflate their work with AI slop and stop trusting online recipe sites altogether.
If they have any concern about new recipes, someday Google and other "search" companies will have to hire people to write recipes for them to scrape and generate new slop from.

more and more, we’re entering a closed-loop system, where everything circulates among a handful of megacorps and platforms, and where no one (except these dominant monopolies) is needed anymore. Still, they do need us to watch — they need some potential consumer to potentially click on an ad and buy something, theoretically at least. That’s the Vampire Valley component here: they need us…they need our life energy. But it’s funny, too. All this high technology: All this innovation. All this effort. All this massive resource-eating that’s killing our world…And it still runs on simple junk consumerism. Companies vying to convince you to buy things that will end up in a landfill in three months to five years. And what happens when no one can buy anything because these same hyper-efficiencizing corps have cut most people out of the economic loop completely? Then the whole thing breaks down, obviously. But then what? Extermination of surplus populations? Mass revolt? Revolutions? Probably all of the above… Yes, we’re cursed to live in interesting times…and blessed, too. Because this AI tech is pushing the capitalist-industrial system to its breaking point. It had to happen at some point, and we’re living in it now.

An artificial intelligence that writes police reports had some explaining to do earlier this month after it claimed a Heber City officer had shape-shifted into a frog.

However, the truth behind that so-called magical transformation is simple.

"The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie that was playing in the background, which happened to be 'The Princess and the Frog,'" Sgt. Keel told FOX 13 News. “That’s when we learned the importance of correcting these AI-generated reports.”
Or, maybe, NOT using AI-generated reports? That's unlikely to happen, since it's probably faster to fix the moments of fantasy rather than for them to sit down and do the work. And the less time they spend sitting at a desk writing up reports, the more they can spend out on the streets, turning into frogs.

THAT was when the thought occurred to them that they should correct the 30% hallucinated drivel their AI was pooping out? AND THEY SAID THAT OUT LOUD???

If I was a defense lawyer there, I'd be shopping for a new BMW.

I wonder how many other agencies thought this was just a dandy idea?

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella really wants you to stop calling AI "slop" in 2026
"We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication," Nadella laments, emphasizing hopes that society will become more accepting of AI, or what Nadella describes as "cognitive amplifier tools." "...and develop a new equilibrium in terms of our “theory of the mind” that accounts for humans being equipped with these new cognitive amplifier tools as we relate to each other."
What a bunch of high-sounding gobbledygook. Sorry, Nadella. It's "slop" now, and "slop" forever.

All I see there is a CEO wanting people to accept their products and give them more money.

Feels like it ultimately boils down to more empathy related to problems it causes and just better “bull shit detection.”
Yeah, I feel like being a bit more socially aware makes it harder to ignore what is wrong with all the slop.
