Top AI researchers and CEOs warn against ‘risk of extinction’ in 22-word statement

A group of top AI researchers, engineers, and CEOs have issued a new warning about the existential threat they believe that AI poses to humanity.

The 22-word statement, trimmed short to make it as broadly acceptable as possible, reads as follows: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

This statement, published by a San Francisco-based non-profit, the Center for AI Safety, has been co-signed by figures including Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as well as Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio — two of the three AI researchers who won the 2018 Turing Award (sometimes referred to as the “Nobel Prize of computing”) for their work on AI. At the time of writing, the year’s third winner, Yann LeCun, now chief AI scientist at Facebook parent company Meta, has not signed.

The actual danger is that people will believe, and act on, the plethora of false narratives. Similar damage has been occurring for years from hoomans absorbing cable news and social media. AI can pump this stuff out 25/8 while instantaneously posting it on every conceivable platform. The human race won't be conquered by robots physically killing our bodies; we'll simply starve to death because the "media" have convinced us that ingesting sustenance will give They/Them the upper hand. The only way to stop it will be to ban it, form semi-religious orders, and consume loads of spice.

Having played with several DIY AI tools, I really wish there was a better pipeline for how to get these things up and running.

A lot of the how toos are Linix CLI based, which would be fine except I am not running Linux on my PC with my good graphics card, which a lot of these need, thats there for games first. Two, GPU drivers in Windows are much better.

Then there are weird dependencies never mentioned, like sometimes needing Visual Studio modules, or CUDA. And often they are all very version dependent.

Training models is so weirdly flakey too and its not clear what all the options do and which work best. I have trained models that make great results, and others, trained on the same data, come out looking like crap. Its so weird.

Mostly I have played with Automatic1111's Stable Diffusion set up, because its easiest.

Well, there are some nice packages around. Simplest is MacOS - try DiffusionBee. On a M1 Mac with 8 GB RAM this runs about the speed of a Geforce 1070, which is quite ok. DiffusionBee - Stable Diffusion App for AI Art

Stable Diffusion’s AI Benefactor Has A History Of Exaggeration

Stability AI became a $1 billion company with the help of a viral AI text-to-image generator and some misleading claims from founder Emad Mostaque.

Emad Mostaque is the modern-day Renaissance man who kicked off the AI gold rush. The Oxford master’s degree holder is an award-winning hedge fund manager, a trusted confidant to the United Nations and the tech founder behind Stable Diffusion — the text-to-image generator that broke the internet last summer and, in his words, pressured OpenAI to launch ChatGPT, the bot that mainstreamed AI. Now he’s one of the faces of the generative AI wave and has secured more than $100 million to pursue his vision of building a truly open AI that he dreams will transform Hollywood, democratize education and vanquish PowerPoint. “Hopefully they’ll give me a Nobel Peace Prize for that,” he joked in a January interview with Forbes.

At least, that’s the way that he tells the story.

In reality, Mostaque has a bachelor’s degree, not a master’s degree from Oxford. The hedge fund’s banner year was followed by one so poor that it shut down months later. The U.N. hasn’t worked with him for years. And while Stable Diffusion was the main reason for his own startup Stability AI’s ascent to prominence, its source code was written by a different group of researchers. “Stability, as far as I know, did not even know about this thing when we created it,” Björn Ommer, the professor who led the research, told Forbes. “They jumped on this wagon only later on.”

Conservatives were already upset about Target over its LGBTQ+-inclusive Pride collection. But now they’re angry over fake AI-generated images that show the store selling “Satanic” clothing.

The images show kids wearing clothes with inverted pentagrams and goat heads and a store display with a red, goat-headed mannequin. The images were created by Facebook user Dan Reese with the AI program Midjourney, Reuters reported. A Target spokesperson told the publication that it “has never sold” the pictured items, and the items aren’t available on the store’s website.

DeSantis attack ad uses fake AI images of Trump embracing Fauci

The campaign backing Ron DeSantis as Republican presidential nominee in 2024 has used what experts identify as AI-generated deepfakes in attack ad against rival Donald Trump.

On June 5th, the “DeSantis War Room” Twitter account shared a video emphasizing Trump’s support for Anthony Fauci, a former White House chief medical advisor and key figure in developing the US response to COVID-19. Fauci has become a hated figure in right-wing politics, particularly among the anti-vax movement, and the attack ad seeks to grow this base of support for DeSantis by portraying Trump and Fauci as close collaborators.

The video includes real clips of Trump discussing Fauci and a collage of six pictures of the two men together. Of the six images, three appear to be AI-generated, showing Trump embracing Fauci. In the collage below they are top-left, bottom-middle, and bottom-right.

I guess the real life images of Trump and Fauci in the same shots were not buddy buddy enough for the attack ad.

OpenAI sued for defamation after ChatGPT fabricates legal accusations against radio host

OpenAI has been hit with what appears to be the first defamation lawsuit responding to false information generated by ChatGPT.

A radio host in Georgia, Mark Walters, is suing the company after ChatGPT stated that Walters had been accused of defrauding and embezzling funds from a non-profit organization. The system generated the information in response to a request from a third party, a journalist named Fred Riehl. Walters’ case was filed June 5th in Georgia’s Superior Court of Gwinnett County and he is seeking unspecified monetary damages from OpenAI.

The case is notable given widespread complaints about false information generated by ChatGPT and other chatbots. These systems have no reliable way to distinguish fact from fiction, and when asked for information — particularly if asked to confirm something the questioner suggests is true — they frequently invent dates, facts, and figures.
