Meta scrambles to delete its own AI accounts after backlash intensifies

Do tell.

Meta now calls itself the "Social Metaverse Company." Do we add fake to that, now?

Apeaking of Facebook's Metaverse. Is there anyone using Horizon Worlds? Like, at all?

Apeaking of Facebook's Metaverse. Is there anyone using Horizon Worlds? Like, at all?

From everything I've read it's still there, after users dropped to a few hundred people per day Facebook lowered the minimum age to 10 and it's all just screaming racist kids now, a la Roblox and to an extent VRChat. I can't find the latest concurrency numbers.

Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta and dropped $36 billion on "the metaverse". Obviously only a tiny fraction of that was spent on Horizon Worlds itself, but it was supposed to be the proof-of-concept that got everyone to start using Meta's backend tools and services so it's definitely a failure and it might be safe to say the whole investment was a failure too.

Creepy, pathetic, sad and all too expected. And so capitalistic!

Gross AI Apps Create Videos of People Kissing Without Their Consent

Countless AI apps are being advertised as ways to AI-generated intimate kissing videos of real people — consent not required.

futurism.com

Ads for sleazy AI services that allow users to generate realistic synthetic video clips of real people kissing are flooding social media — the latest trend in the rise of easy-to-use generative AI tools blurring the lines of consent.

Some of these many services advertise a tamer vision for their product, for example suggesting that users might use AI to create videos of their grandparents sharing a kiss. Most, though, immediately veer into dark territory, with advertisements and product webpages imploring users to leverage AI as a way to fabricate videos of themselves locking lips with an unwitting crush or former partner. The vibes are bad, like an ad on Instagram — circulating on X-formerly-Twitter and shown below — in which an app takes images of a girl with braces and an older man, and uses them to produce a video of the two wetly making out.

In the "AI" future, only corporations are allowed to make money on anything.

Facebook Apparently Trained Its AI by Torrenting Pirated Books Stolen From Authors

Newly unredacted court documents allege that Facebook knowingly used pirated books from the database LibGen to train its AI models.

futurism.com

Newly unredacted court documents allege that Meta, formerly Facebook, knowingly used pirated books obtained from the online archive Library Genesis to train its AI models, Wired reports.

Submitted in an ongoing lawsuit filed against the platform by a group of authors including Ta-Nehisi Coates and comedian Sarah Silverman, the documents were finally released in full after a judge shot down Meta's attempts to keep portions of them sealed.

The judge argued, per Wired, that Meta fought for the redactions merely to "avoid negative publicity," citing a damning internal quote from one of its employees.

Poor, stupid AI.

OpenAI’s Most Advanced AI Release Stumped by New York Times Word Game

OpenAI's o1 reasoning model was caught massively struggling to solve the New York Times' Connections word game.

futurism.com

While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims that the company already has the building blocks for artificial general intelligence, a simple test of its most advanced publicly-avilable AI system was caught majorly lacking by a puzzle that countless people do every day.

As Walter Bradley Center for Natural and Artificial Intelligence senior fellow Gary Smith writes for Mind Matters, OpenAI's o1 "reasoning" model failed spectacularly when tasked with solving the New York Times' notoriously tricky Connections word game.

The game's rules are deceptively simple. Players are given 16 terms and tasked with figuring out what they have in common, within groups of four — but because the things relating them can be as obvious as "book subtitles" or as esoteric as "words that start with fire," it can be quite challenging.

As expected, successful answers from the LLMs were spotty at best, with some choice of groupings ("breeze," "puff," "broad," and "picnic" were "types of movement or air" - ???) bordering on the bizarre.

Maybe instead of ChatGPT, OpenAI should start putting up servers of friends people can chat with.

Traditionally programmers use a rubber duck or stuffed animal for explaining the problem to, which uses less power.

But does that rubber duck rotate, which uses some power?

Not usually.

We have a stuffed Marvin the Martian. He has an official ID. He's also has an email account so we can pose a scenario and anyone in the office can answer, as Marvin, which I suppose makes us our own conglomerated LLMAIBBQ.

When I was in IT/help desk we had a stuffed monkey (unnamed) who would get tossed around the department when we were "troubleshooting" a topic. The monkey never participated in the troubleshooting, though. It had better things to do, being a monkey.
