What I paid today was:

USD$34.98 — hosting, monthly
USD$24.99 — domain renewal (annual at this price unless the registrar increases it)

There's also an annual charge for USD$29.99 for the SSL certificate that looks like it will come up in December.

The Xenforo license is lapsed; I don't know the email Cris used for the customer area login and this might be locked behind the email address none of us will likely ever have access to — all the more reason that I think this should be migrated somewhere else deliberately as a priority, since I might not be able to get in to renew it regardless. Now that I have direct access to the site backend, I can do proper backups and exports and nobody needs to scrape content. It'd be a new license cost when Xenforo is bought, I think this is about USD$200 and then it's like USD$60 a year for the renewals.

So the cost to cover the site maintenance at a minimum is not massive, especially divided out amongst multiple people chipping in.

At the moment I can't do anything to contribute I'm afraid.

I'm on a fixed SSDI income, but I do have plans to apply for MSP so I don't have to pay for Medicare premiums anymore, though I can't do that until december in preparation for 2027 since I'm certain my state's healthcare program has expended what it has available for premiums rebates under MSP. That said, assuming it goes through I'll have 200 extra dollars a month, and I can pitch in 10 if need be.

I can do Venmo or Cashapp. I have paypal, but I don't want anything to do with them if I can help it. I also am willing to volunteer as a moderator and even do some backend work too as I'm a amateur sysadmin and have some experience with cPanel from years ago and forum/community moderation, if there's not enough hands to go around to manage the place.

I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to help money-wise, as I'm not really in a good place financially. But I'd be willing to help out in other ways if possible. Let me know if you find yourself in need of moderators or other support staff or anything like that.

I don't think anyone needs to feel obligated or pressured to chip in financially, the costs are pretty low all things considered. Xenforo looks like it only natively supports PayPal anyway (Venmo and CashApp also don't exist in Australia, but that's a problem for further down the track.) It looks like there's enough people who can chip in a little bit and we can figure out that aspect of things as we go.

Khamon kindly paid me back for the cost to get the site in good financial graces again so everyone say "thank you Khamon" and make sure it's really awkward.

We could divide the 40$ by four people (10$), or by eight (5$), or one person per month (40$), etc. Lots of possibilities. In any case, very doable, so no worries…

Yes, I think on the financial end of things it looks very likely that there's enough community generosity to make sure the costs are covered.

Thank you to Khamon and Joshua. Everything seems to be recovering swimmingly; I'm very grateful for that. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we may contribute money to keep this going; it's a comfort and a release for me. Comfort to know that there are sane people left outside of California (yes, I'm VERY provincial being a native Californian), and a release to read of your adventures in RL/SL and to tell of some of mine.

Good to know. I would suggest everyone turn off subscriptions to Patreon as well as PayPal if they haven't. I don't know if that will be accessible either but I'll see what I can do. Assuming I can get in, however, I'm also going to assume that people are all right with me suggesting to his family that they take whatever is in there, if indeed there is anything in there at all.

I just got an email from Cris' family informing me someone had contacted them to "warn them" about helping me, and I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed.

I don't even care about anyone who wants to question my motives — it is what it is, and I think I've gone above and beyond to be as open and communicative and inclusive as possible, every step of the way — but I also went out of my way not to identify his family directly: in addition to general respect for their privacy, I must remind you all that they are grieving the loss of a son and cousin who died less than three weeks ago, and to whom nothing about Cris' life and existence was known until less than three weeks ago. They don't have time for forum drama from people who don't understand boundaries and basic courtesy, they just lost a family member.

There's a lot more I'd say about this kind of behaviour, but I'll leave it there and hope that the parties in question show more respect towards his family in the future; and if you want to complain about or criticise me, you're welcome to do so directly.
