He was never going to back down on his wall in the first place. The media didn't pressure Donald into anything. I assure you, he was always going to pick the worst outcome.
Yes, he does not care how many experts tell him it is ineffectual (it does not do anything about visa overstays, which is a large percentage of undocumented people), he does not care that he himself tweeted that border security peepsare being effective, he does not care it is a symbol of oppression (he wants that), he does not care that there are a gazillion things that could use the money more, he does not care his original promise about mexico paying will never happen. All he cares about is that he used it as a rallying cry and people liked it. If people were chanting 'we will go to pluto and venusians will pay for it' that is what he would want money for.

And he's shut the government down. This is, what, the third time this year now? That's got to be some sort of record for number of shutdowns for any president in one term.
Geez, really? I haven't been following the news much lately. Click click, yup, the government partially shut down.

You can be forgiven for not noticing, it is the third one this year.

The Rs have gotten crafty lately. They try not to shut down things people will notice.

Yes, that's why they only shut down the government.

The plan backfires though. Those shutdowns are essentially Trump's version of holding his breath until he gets his will and it only works if people notice.

Yeah, but you can't blame this one on the "R's" as an entity. This one's 100% on Donald Jagoff Trump, who was so upset by rightwing talkshow people (his usual fawning advocates) saying unkind things about him that he threw a tantrum and overturned his own decision.

We are shutting down the federal government

The night before Christmas

Because the House refused to vote on a CR that passed the Senate unanimously

To avoid embarrassing the President of the United States by having his veto overridden by his own party

Because he had a last-minute temper tantrum over his media coverage.

This is the world we live in now.

As I understand it, the House initially passed a CR that went to the Senate and got passed unanimously. It was on its way to the President's desk when he decided to throw a Trumper tantrum and declare he wasn't going to sign it. At this point, the House caved, quickly sending a CR including the wall funding to the Senate, who rejected it. What they should have done was let Trump veto the original bill, then allow them and the Senate to override the veto. But, you're right. They were too concerned with avoiding embarrassing the President.

Any way you slice it, this is all 100 percent Trump's shutdown. And he just went back on his word a week ago promising to own it if it happened, sending a tweet out blaming the Democrats for it.

It's really the Republicans shutdown, at least the House Republicans. Ryan is still speaker, he could have easily overridden any Trumpian veto, since the Senate was already unanimous on the CR. So, to avoid embarrassing a Republican president, the Republican Congress refused to override a potential veto. The Republicans and Trump own this, completely. They've bequeathed it to the next Congress, abdicating their duty to the People and our government employees.

What I mean is they try to keep things that will get people calling their congresscritters open, they HATE signs like 'due to the government shutdown...' on things like parks. Rather they shut down departments people are not likely to notice at first unless you work with them. Agencies with a high level of people that would need to work anyway are first on the chopping block.
