Sondland contributed a million dollars to Trump's inauguration, which pretty much went into his pocket. He got his ambassador to the EU position in return. No quid pro quo? Don't make me laugh. Sondland runs a chain of fairly nice hotels. He knows nothing about foreign policy. But ambassadors get invited to all the best parties, and they get to stay at really nice places. Interestingly, by extension this means extroverts are better at it than introverts. Yet somehow countries particularly introverted have embassies as well.

I listen to some podcasts made by people who work in the federal government, and they said that while there are ambassadors who are not qualified for the job, they are normally in countries that are not particularly important in global politics, and they are aware that they are figureheads and leave the decisionmaking to their advisors.
