With data of a sensitive nature, it's normal process to archive before deleting, and to backup archives to off-site storage. This isn't just a developer going "OOPS!", this is management totally dropping the ball at every step along the way, up to including the top level of any organization where hiring, funding and data-rentention policies are put into place.

I don't think back-ups would help much, given all the input data they'd lose if they reverted to last November...
You restore backups to a separate cluster, extract the historical data, and reinsert it.

If they don't have the minimal database chops needed for this, hire someone.

This is an official database we're talking about, I doubt they have the necessary data nor the technical ability to do that. I'd even be surprised if they had sufficient and up-to-date documentation to even attempt it.

...and it gets worse, up to 400,000 records gone is the latest count : Deletion of police records led to ‘near misses’ on serious crimes
As many as 400,000 records scrubbed from national computer by accident

The accidental deletion of as many as 400,000 records from a police computer databases led to a number of “near misses” in identifying suspects in serious crimes, it has emerged.
It emerged on Friday that at least 150,000 records relating to people arrested and released without further action were scrubbed from the Police National Computer after being incorrectly flagged for removal.

But now a letter from the National Police Chiefs Council has revealed that the blunder may have affected as many as 213,000 offence records, 175,000 arrest records and 15,000 person records stored on the system which shares criminal records information across the UK.

This isn't, though, an issue with a database backup going wrong.

The UK, along with the rest of Europe (and possibly many other places too) takes data protection far more seriously than does the US and, by law, much evidence collected during the course of a criminal investigation about "persons of interest" must be destroyed after the investigation and any subsequent trials and appeals have concluded.

See Protection of Freedoms Act 2012: how DNA and fingerprint evidence is protected in law for further details.

When this data is deleted, the Home Office don't keep an historical back-up because that would be unlawful.

The problem seems to be that evidence was being mistakenly flagged for permanent deletion, not that they failed to back stuff up and lived to regret it when the system crashed.

As I recall, he was known to be somewhat more unwilling to restrain the powers of the executive branch by judicial review than were his colleagues in the Supreme Court, but otherwise I don't remember much about him, good or bad.

Since he's retired, though, he's headed off into deep Tory libertarian territory.

The former justice, who served on the supreme court until 2018, said he believed his children’s and grandchildren’s lives were “worth more because they’ve got a lot more of it ahead”.
o buddy you never go full Prince Philip. If you want to say something like that it needs to be framed differently. "In this time of crisis, the effects of which will be felt for the next generation and more, I believe first priority must be placed on preserving and building upon the kind of world we need to leave to our children and to place their long term needs first."

Assistant state attorney Kathleen Hagerty told Cook County judge Susana Ortiz that other passengers had been giving food to Singh, who does not have a criminal background. Hagerty said Singh had found the badge in the airport and was “scared to go home due to Covid”.

Ortiz reportedly told the court: “You’re telling me that an unauthorised, non-employee individual was allegedly living within a secure part of the O’Hare airport terminal from 10 October, 2020, to 16 January, 2021, and was not detected? I want to understand you correctly.”

Looks like Biden is making Rachel Levine his assistant health secretary.

That's kinda sad. I like Levine. She's our secretary of health in Pennsylvania, so she's been on TV telling us what's happening since corona hit. I think PA's lockdowns didn't go far enough, but I know I can't pin all the blame for that on her. Levine didn't do things like downplay the effectiveness of masks early in the pandemic like Faucci did, which makes her one of the few reliable official sources of information.

This will not end well

Bach’s optimism was criticised by the leading sports marketer Robert Maes, whose experience after working with 30 national Olympic committees and five global sponsors makes him deeply sceptical the Games will take place.

“I represent an important number of NOCs, and arrange training camps for athletes and teams, and I believe it is madness to organise Olympics here,” Maes said. “I call myself a good organiser of sports events and I’ve done Formula One events, track and field and football games, but I cannot see how the Olympics can be held in the current climate.”
“I am known in the business as having a big mouth but there comes a time where reality should set in. Basically the IOC and LOC are now doing a Donald Trump and ignoring reality.”

Not quite sure how they check that anyone who collects the payment will self-isolate, but at least it helps out honest people who self-isolate.

Bit worried, though, about the number of healthy people -- particularly in the late teens or early 20s -- who might like the prospect of collecting £500 in return for running the very low risk, at their age, of developing serious symptoms, and set out deliberately to get themselves infected.

Also, since there's a requirement for eligibility, nothing like a run on testing facilities for any sniffle of any level to get that form 27B/6 filled out. Will recipients also need to have this Notarized?

I've not read the details, but I'd imagine it would be offered as an incentive to participate in, and comply with, the government's Track and Trace scheme.

ETA: You can claim the payment anyway, if you're on a low income, but that's had a low take-up because it's apparently quite a hassle to apply, and if you can't afford to take time off your minimum wage, 0 hours, contract, and risk not getting the payment at the end of it, then it's not a lot of help.

This would be the solution.
