Because nothing cheers up NYC like low flying commercial planes....
I grew up in upper Manhattan, which, depending on wind direction, is on the approach to LaGuardia Airport. This was in the 1960's, before noise reduction was implemented. Our grade school classes had to frequently pause when a plane flew by. Today I live near the approach path to Atlanta's airport. Thanks to ~30 dB of noise reduction technology, I can barely hear them. My brother still lives there, in the Bronx. Airplanes these days are quieter than most of the other city noises when I visit.
Low flying commercial planes in New York City is just ridiculous
Sounds like you have no understanding of New York's geography. Let me help you with that:
There are three major airports: Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK. The city proper has five boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx, which is off this image to the North. There are low-flying airplanes overhead all the time, because that's what a plane does when it takes off and lands, and there are lots of people flying in and out in normal times. A few extra planes at a time when air traffic is down 80% is hardly worth mentioning.
