I often think about how the last 3 years + would have gone had Trump not been elected. Now I find myself thinking, in particular how the response to the virus would have differed. While I'd question whether a National Health Service is a particularly socialist idea (Saudi Arabia isn't a particularly socialist place, and neither is South Korea), I think it's true to say many places, and particularly the UK, regard health care as something it's the government's job to provide, just as it's the government's job to maintain our armed forces rather than rely on mercenaries.
I'm old enough to have met people who lived through the Great Depression, like the nice old lady who lived in the next apartment when I was a kid. People of her generation didn't throw anything away. My brother and I got a giant ball of string from her, which provided us with endless fun. But the idea of saving something as mundane as string is probably foreign to younger folks.
