There aren't even signs up for masking at most stores around here anymore. Last time I went to Wal-mart there was almost no masks. Today at the Post Office dropping off a package (where there ARE signs), the woman behind the counter said I didn't have to wear a mask there, she said she noticed my glasses fogging up. Not surprised though, that lady at that post office I don't think has ever worn a mask even at the peak times.

They just rescinded the mask mandate in OR on the 12th. I haven't even gone anywhere yet.

I admit I've been slacking a bit on wearing my mask lately, because everything is feeling more normal. Out of curiosity, I checked the numbers, and good news... things are looking really, really good in America right now! Our current reproduction rate is 0.65.

The rest of the world, though? If you just look at new cases, it looks very bad! Some countries are going orders of magnitude more hyperbolic than anything we've seen since the beginning of this pandemic. Disease doesn't respect borders, so we can expect these kinds infection rates to hit America, eventually.

Here's a chart of the G7 countries, plus India and Brazil (just for a bit of variety).

If we look at the confirmed deaths, though, the picture is more positive. Deaths from corona are way down.

So in places where cases are through the roof, the mortality rate is way down. Good sign, right? Maybe the virus is less deadly now? I don't think so.

Notice who is at the bottom of the developed world in case numbers, yet at the top in mortality rate. That's right... America! This is what we get for having a private health care system.

Even when we have less cases than anybody else, more people die here. Our system is so corrupt and inefficient, we die at a rate 50% higher than people in Germany, whose case rate per million is currently 2934% higher than America's!

Moralizing and politics aside... maybe it's a good idea to keep masking, for now.

Eventually, those massive case spikes in other parts of the world will hit America, and when they do, it will surprise us, and more of us will die than most people realize right now, because our health care system will absolutely let you die a lot faster than hospitals in the rest of the world.
