A long-distance couple who have been separated by pandemic travel rules for 18 months have been granted an exemption to get married in England.

Since March last year, Australia has banned its citizens from leaving the country as part of its Covid strategy.

But Australian Chris Quealy, 72, now has dispensation to leave the country, after he proposed to Penny Steven, 69, over Zoom this year.

"I am on cloud nine," says Penny, from Amersham. "It is a dream come true."

It's no accident, Donnelly says, that his friends were so open. "The norms of the gay community say: Share your medical history, share your risks with other people so that they can be responsible and take care of themselves as well," he says. "That came with years of practice within the community, particularly around HIV and AIDS."

That willingness to share information about health and contacts is not a given. Contact tracing COVID-19 in the U.S. has had a lot of problems throughout the pandemic. With a fragmented public health system, tracing outbreaks across jurisdictions has been one challenge. Getting people to report their close contacts and where they were has been another. One CDC report found that two-thirds of people interviewed did not provide any contacts to a contact tracer.

The media reports on all these unvaccinated people dying from Covid-19, but it does so over and over again without mentioning that obesity is a major risk factor. I recognize that being overweight is a difficult emotional taboo for Americans to discuss, but avoidance of that topic is quite literally killing them.

One of the saddest stories I can remember reading about was a young lesbian couple who weren't anti-vax, but just weren't in any hurry to get vaccinated. They didn't see the need, even though one of the pair was Latina and morbidly obese, both known risk factors. The article about them mentioned in passing that she was "a little overweight" when the photos of the couple showed quitely clearly that she was clinically obese. They both contracted Covid and the skinny white girl survived, but her wife died.

Surely there must be some way to inform people about this risk factor without resorting to fat shaming. Or do they know it's a risk factor and refuse to see themselves in that category? I'm well aware that my weight puts me at risk, which is one of the reasons I was anxious to get vaccinated and will happily get a booster as soon as it's available.

America as a whole has a weight problem, which has made us even more vulnerable. Obesity is rampant in rural poor communities, which makes them even more vulnerable to Covid-19. We need to admit that in hopes it gets more people to vaccinate.

Right wing moderator Dick Farrel, who called Fauci a freak and was heavily against COVID19 vaccination, passed away because of COVID19 at age 65. Before his death he changed his mind and urged his friends to get vaccinated.

The Texas trauma service area that includes Austin only has six available ICU beds, 499 available hospital beds and 313 available ventilators – a stunning dearth of resources for a population nearly 2.4 million strong.

In Austin’s metropolitan statistical area, 510 Covid patients are currently hospitalized, 184 are in the ICU, and 102 are on ventilators.

About a third of recent hospitalizations have been among patients younger than 50, underscoring the Delta variant’s serious threat to younger Texans who have opted against vaccination.

“Hospital bed availability and critical care is extremely limited in our hospital systems, not just for Covid-19 patients, but for anyone who may need treatment,” Walkes said. “The community has to come together again and stave off disaster.”

The way they demonize Fauci is despicable.
And on the campaign trail, Donald Trump’s former press secretary, Sarah Sanders, who is thefavorite to become the next governor of Arkansas, sent out a long email to supporters titled Why I Got Vaccinated urging them to get the shot too (while also bashing the country’s leading infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci).
That's from a link in the article Innula posted on the vaccine thread.
He's a convenient scapegoat for them, but it's on their heads is he or his family get harmed because of it. 😡
