How the hell have we managed to survive as a species thus far with such glaringly blatant stupidity among us?
You may not have been on SLU when my sig used to read "The stupidity of the human race never ceases to amaze me." It's still true. We are that close to wiping ourselves out. Watching the weather satellite images for several decades now and seeing all the green turning gray and brown because people. Zooming in and out on Google map... Something broke. I want off.

Intelligence as a survival trait is overrated. We were smart enough to make stone tools, and that was basically all we needed for about 200,000 years. In the last 20,000 years we have stressed our original design to the breaking point with too many clever toys.

I am not sanguine about our fate as a species, nor any of the other large animal & plant species on this planet. But, in recent times, our apparent manner of destroying ourselves was through nuclear war. It was even theorized -- in the sci-fi community -- that the reason we had not made contact of any sort with any other technological species in our stellar neighborhood is that all such species destroy themselves in nuclear war. Clearly, we have found a new way of destroying ourselves. It may also be that so have any possible neighbors.

The last 100 in particular. Environmental problems before that were localized.

The "almost zero" thing reminds me a bit of the "99% survival rate" that COVID has, that people like to push as an excuse why vaccines and masks are dumb.

Nevermind that back before everyone was masking and locked down etc it was like a 95% at best, or 5%+ dyin, until we got things under control with these measures. And nevermind that if 1% of the population dies off that's almost 80 million people.

The media focus on fatality rate is really misplaced for Covid. A far greater number of people are badly damaged by it, even though they survive. It's not a binary recovery of "live or die", it's a sliding scale of "recover fine, live with varying degrees of impairment, die".

COVID-19 relief money was meant to aid workers, small business owners and people who had lost their jobs or lost wages during the pandemic. It was meant for people who are financially struggling due to something they had no control over. Of course, if you happen to be a Republican government official in Shiawassee County, Mich., you might have briefly been under the impression that financial relief efforts served a different purpose—to make it rain on your bank account balance.

The Associated Press reports that elected officials in the conservative Michigan county gifted themselves and other county officials $65,000 worth of COVID relief money for bonuses and are now giving it all back after public outcry—and after legal officials informed them that what they were doing was illegal AF.
