Yosemitie Bear died on Saturday. He may have died from corona. (I think he died from corona)
If you don't remember, Yosemitie Bear gave us this display of pure bliss 10 years ago:
From what I remember, according to
the first article I read about this over the weekend, on Yahoo news, he had a fever and breathing problems, so he got a corona test, but died waiting for a result. I read that yahoo article two days ago. Since then, the parts of the Yahoo article that discuss his health problems have been removed. It looks like the article has been chopped in half. I looked around a bit, and
according to buzzfeed, the result came back, and he tested negative for corona. I don't trust buzzfeed one bit, though, due to past experiences.
Neither the Yahoo, nor the Buzzfeed articles post screen caps of the FB posts in question, so I tracked down Bear's
FB memorial page and dug through it a bit. I can't tell if going over a dead man's facebook page is creepy or just a normal way to pay respects in a socially distanced world. In the past, even before social distancing, I've seen people memorialized on the internet by reposting them, as a way to remember them, so I guess I'll go with respectful.
Yosemitie Bear was an avid facebook user. His last post was
a selfie from a butterfly festival.
Anyway... the post that seems to be causing the confusion is this one.
The following exchange in the comments show that it took days to get a test. From what I can tell, and he never got results from that test, but a chest x-ray did not show corona. This strikes me as weird. If we can detect corona with chest x-rays, then why do we swab?
I took this screen cap just now, so 1w ago in the cap indicates Tuesday, May 5.
I don't think we can know for certain, but to me, just given his symptoms, it seems likely he died from corona.
One last thing I ran across while digging through bear's facebook: Yosemitie Bear was kind of a transhumanist... maybe? This comment was also under the post where he talks about fever and congestion. Bear believed in reincarnation, but he also believed that he could reawaken his spirit with a youtube video playlist, after he's reborn. I've seen a lot of wild transhumanist ideas regarding immortality bouncing around SecondLife, but Bear's view on the intersection of spirituality and technology seems pretty unique to me. If reincarnation does exist, this seems like a very appropriate way for Yosemitie Bear to come back.
