This has been fantastic feedback, and I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share your thoughts.

I'm actually part of the MarsColonia marketing team, but I didn't mention that initially because I wanted to hear honest opinions as a user.
We've taken all of your feedback into account. Turning MarsColonia into something that's better than Second Life will take time, but certainly not another 20 years, perhaps 1 or 2 years.

Since we're already on the topic, I'd love to invite some of you legends to join MarsColonia. Once our community forum launches, you'll receive the same status and badges you've earned here, so you won't have to start from zero. And the thread discussing MarsColonia over on bitcointalk.org must have got deleted and shows a 404. (Only just got around to checking it out) Probably WorldTraveller tried the same thing there and got their thread deleted. And it looks like the MarsColonia domain was created only 9 days ago. The only other links I've found so far is a post on Twitter/X, an instagram which contains what looks like AI art, but I'm no expert. And a Threads post, probably containing the stuff posted to instagram posted 2 days ago.

So, basically, a semi-AI/semi-human ad bot (with a striking resemblance to that other one who pulls this from time to time, complete with the "Yeah, well that's just, like, your opinion, man," defensiveness at the slightest provocation) showed up to pimp a vaporware virtual world and attempt to poach users for another forum? Do I have that about right?

Hahaha... It's like talking to Sheldon, explaining the meaning of every single word. Now, what do you extract from this line? I'm interested to know.

We haven't posted it on Bitcointalk yet. We'll make a proper announcement on that forum once things are stable, and here as well (it'll probably get roasted here a lot, but that's part of the fun).

That's correct, things are just getting started. It's still in the early days, just like any other startup or company. It's not a finished product. The best way is to launch the product and let the market react. That tells you what needs to be improved, what's more important, and where to focus next.

Even though some users are roasting it here, some of the feedback has been really great, especially from Noodles, Sheera Khan and Jopsy Pendragon

Since you mentioned it to be an european thing, MarsColonia is legally required to have that by the DSGVO or however the General Data Protection Rule is called at your place. You have to have a way to tell, what data you have about a person and that person has a right to demand a copy of that data and to correct or demand you delete that data. And I can't see any reason to object to that request as there's no contract or something like that that requires MC to have those data stored.

Is your group part of a larger studio/publisher/development umbrella, and can you say which? And/or are you sponsored/benefacted by a particular individual or group that you could name? Stuff like that can have a serious impact on not just the direction but the flavor and appeal of your platform.

Some interesting things have started in the cliche "random guy's garage workshop" but stuff on this scale tends to require some giant shoulders to stand on.

MarsColonia started as a hobby between a few people who love Mars. We wanted to build an experience that lets others imagine what life on Mars could be like.

We're bootstrapping the project, so selling certificates helps fund development while growing our community. As the community grows, we'll keep improving the experience based on feedback. Once there is good community size, the long-term goal is to raise funding from gaming VCs and build a high-quality 3D world.

Because this is so focused on a single central idea, it feels to me that it would have been better to build it on a pre-existing platform (SecondLife?!) rather than go to the extreme of creating your own platform, and getting yourself into a project that is a whole magnitude more difficult.
