That's terrible. Given that matches seldom feature more than 1 goal over the course of a couple of hours, removing the boozy songs (and occasional riots) seems like a serious blow to the entertainment value of the game. You're basically left with a bunch of men in shorts running up and down a huge field, occasionally faking grievous injury or, far too rarely, breaking into a slapfight. And there's that one guy down at the end whose shirt doesn't match. 😴

At least hockey has "slamming against the sideboards" and some serious fisticuffs among the players on a regular basis. Plus, you can always just stare into space and ponder the mysteries of "offsides" and "icing," which are nonsense words created by hockey referees to confound the players and bystanders alike.</troll>

I'm also curious if conservative media has covered this much at all.... they are usually mum with anything that is so embarrassing to their narrative.
I kinda doubt it. I don't know many conservatives who are much into soccer. Now, if it involved loud cars speeding around in a circle, or throwing a heavy ball down a slick, wooden lane, or a bunch of over-buffed men spending hours trying to get their quarter back...

I'd be shocked if a world cup 2030 doesn't happen. ...but I'm also willing to bet heavily that the USA won't be trusted to host it again for many years. I'm also curious if conservative media has covered this much at all.... they are usually mum with anything that is so embarrassing to their narrative.
I don't follow soccer much (I leave that to my cousin) but as I understand it from the Economist article and elsewhere there's a tension (to say the least) in the organisational structure of international soccer, between the national leagues, FIFA, and the various continental confederations (UEFA in Europe, CAF in Africa, AFC in Asia, CONMEBOL in South America, CONCACAF in North and Central America, and the Caribbean, and OFC in Oceania and the Pacific Islands), and their conflicting demands on players' time from their national and continental leagues, and FIFA's competing international competitions.

There's serious money at stake here, and where there's serious money to be had, conflict almost inevitably follows.

The embarrassing truth behind President Donald Trump’s made-up peace prize has been exposed.

The president, who turns 80 this week, had long pined for the Nobel Peace Prize, but he was snubbed last year in favor of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Gianni Infantino, the president of soccer’s global governing body, FIFA, sensed an opportunity and cooked up the ‘FIFA Peace Prize’ to soothe Trump. He did so because a closer relationship with the U.S. president would mean a smoother World Cup, which, in turn, would help repair his organization’s image after years of fraud and neglect.

Infantino, a former lawyer from Switzerland, had lobbied for Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, but quickly devised a plan when he was overlooked, according to The New York Times.

Just weeks after the snub, senior officials at the organization, a nonprofit with billions of dollars in its coffers, were informed of the plan.

According to the Times, they asked how much time they would have to pull off the ingenious stroke of bootlickery. They also needed to know what the criteria for the award would be and how the nomination committee would be structured.

In place of answers, some officials were told immediately that Trump would be the winner, and the plan was to stage a charade to please him, the Times reported, citing an insider.[...]

The article goes on to explain how the price itself (disembodied hands of drowning people, frantically reaching for a golden orb) came from their archive for miscellaneous works. FIFA also moved the World Cup draw from Las Vegas to Washington because moving Trump's fat ass to Vegas would have caused too much of a hassle. Norway's soccer board filed an ethics complaint and the White House screeched "TDS!!!" in response to this story (even though it focuses on FIFA's conduct and not on Trump).

ETA: Hmm, this calls for a special and unique kind of reaction. *rummages in FIFA junk drawer* How about this?

The planning of the world cup started years before the second term of the orange one. But in hindsight it was a big mistake to take the USA as one of the hosts.
Not that the FIFA cares. They are only interested in the USD it will make.
