Trump has not attended any World Cup games. He has not gone to any of the stadiums. And there is, of course, a very good reason for that. It is not safe for him.

He can’t even safely attend basketball matches. When he attended the NBA finals in Madison Square Garden last month, he was loudly booed by the fans. If he went to a World Cup game, things would be much worse. The world has none of the vestigial respect for his head-of-state position which Americans might retain. He would be met by any of a variety of songs. These include, but are not limited to, Australia’s “Aussie boys, we’re on a bender, Donald Trump is a sex offender” and England’s “He’s fat with piles, he’s in the Epstein files, Trump the cunt, Trump the cunt.”

Trump has been completely excluded from the World Cup. What initially felt like an event which would be tainted by his participation has been saved by the fact that he cannot safely attend. His fear of an international crowd has prevented him from securing any reflected glory. All that obsequious boot-licking from Giovanni Infantino, with his imaginary Fifa Nobel peace prize, was for nothing. The moment that the fans became involved, it was clear that they would annihilate Trump’s dignity the moment they were given the chance.

American top goal scorer Folarin Balogun was given a red card in the last soccer match, which is a ban for minimum 1 match.

Trump was not happy with it, and called personally Giovanni Infantino. The FIFA immediately reversed that decision by lifting the ban.

This is the first time since 1962 this happened.

Trump's successful intervention enrages soccer officials all around the globe: first to protest was the Belgium soccer association.

Also Jürgen Klopp, soon to be German national coach, criticised it harshly.

Furthermore the UEFA, which has all European national associations as members, plans to protest and take the Belgium stance.

People expect a joint statement by UEFA later this day.

In a statement Sunday, the world soccer governing body said: “In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.”

The Belgian football association said it was “astonished” by the decision to overturn the suspension. “In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options,” the association noted.

Senior politicians from across Belgium reacted with bafflement.

“True strength lies in winning with fair play (and by following all the rules). That’s what Belgium will do tomorrow. Full support for the Royal Belgian FA, which announced tonight that it is exploring all possibilities to protect the legitimate rights of all participants as well as the fundamental principles of fair play that govern soccer during this World Cup,” said Jacqueline Galant, Walloon sports minister from the French-speaking liberal Reformist Movement.

“Shame on you! When money calls the shots, the World Cup loses all credibility. Adapting the rules to please Trump, trying to cheat to win—what a deplorable image for FIFA, for the soccer World Cup, and for the United States. Rules must be respected by everyone, in sports as in life,” the opposition Socialist party said in a statement.

“Amazing how a red card suddenly becomes ‘unjust’ when Trump gets involved ... FIFA must defend fairness, not give the impression of yielding to political pressures. See you on the pitch: the Devils’ victory will be all the more valuable,” added Yvan Verougstraete, a member of the European Parliament and president of the Francophone centrist Les Engagés party.

Even though I don't follow football, this really annoys me because, or so it seems to me, there's absolutely no point in playing a game unless everyone sticks to the rules. Kicking the ball round the pitch is simply freeform exercise unless it takes place within the constraints of mutually agreed rules to which everyone adheres. That's what makes it a game of soccer.

Being able to phone the ruler to get have the normal rules suspended in favour of your (and his) favoured team makes the whole exercise pointless.

Leave it to Our Beloved Idiot to create a furor, sour the atmosphere, and accomplish absolutely nothing beyond lowering our already decrepit world reputation.

Trump made a statement about the call, which is unbelievable as most he says:

President Trump addressed the media on Monday morning, making it clear that he didn't demand anything.

The President of the United States says he simply called the head of FIFA to ask for a review.

"All I did was ask for a review. I didn't say, you have to do this," Trump said at a White House media briefing on Monday morning. "This man is a smart, tough man, Gianni Infantino. He's a smart, tough man, and his stock has gone through the roof because the job he has done has been great. I feel like we have to have all the best players on the field."

"I didn't think it was a foul," he said. "I thought it was two great athletes that crashed each other and got entangled."

President Trump says that he "loves" sports and couldn't believe that a foul was called and that Balogun was going to miss Monday's match.

"I saw the play, and I'm a person that loves sports ... that wasn't a foul. That wasn't even an infraction ... this referee, who is a little bit suspect if you check his past. He made a call that nobody could believe ... he's our best player, or one of our best players. And he gave him a red card. I didn't know what that meant ... yes, I asked for a review by FIFA. [Balogun] didn't do anything wrong, and he's our best player or one of our best players."

The decision specifically stated that this suspension included the automatic suspension that would otherwise have been served in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup match USA v. Belgium, scheduled for 6 July 2026. In practical terms, absent any further measure by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Balogun would have been ineligible to participate in that match.

However, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee went on to apply Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, under which it has discretion to suspend the implementation of any disciplinary measures, and ordered that the implementation of the one-match suspension be suspended for a probationary period of one year. As a result, Balogun is not required to immediately serve the suspension. Instead, the sanction remains dormant during the probationary period and will only be activated if he commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during that one-year period. Should such a subsequent offence occur, the suspended one-match ban would be enforced in addition to any new sanction imposed for the later misconduct.

No word whatsoever why Balogun deserves this treatment. It's disgusting.
