This here is a weird one: an Italian guy named Gigi D'Agostino producing a French named album named "L'amour toujours" containing songs with English lyrics only published by a German label. But good music.

"Wir sind Helden" is mostly a German Pop Band. Neue Deutsche Welle is a thing which happened in the 80s for a short while and then poofed around 1984, so they came over 20 years too late to that party. They had some tracks which paid hommage to NDW and indeed are in that style, but at core they are no real NDW band.

Famous original bands of the NDW era are e.g. Trio, and singers e.g. Nena (99 red balloons):

England. From Gang of Four's second album, released 40 years ago yesterday (and the past is a foreign country as well).

Thanks, I'd missed a Neu (as in somewhat Neu Neu Deutsche Welle) and yeah, they were mostly pop but very, very clever thanks to Judith Holofern's lyrics. I'm going to have to look into the older groups, I skimmed a few NDW groups on YouTube and like the sound. I've also always liked Nena, although she gets a bit syrupy and her lyrics are meh so I don't do a lot of replays anymore.

I remember recognizing "Da Da Da" instantly as "Rock-1" on the Casio I grew up with... And that glorious "piano" tone. =^-^=

I put up here in the "Nobody cares about music" thread of the forum an in depth review and demonstration of that music instrument which Trio, amongst many other like Lady Gaga and Fergie, used for that piano tone. It's being called the Casio VL-TONE VL-1, and is a mixture of calculatur and keyboard.

That thing is even cheap to buy on eBay, normally around 20-40 bucks only.

There was a legendary TV show back then, the Hitparade. It was based on domestic record sales, many acts of the NDW had no music videos, and only were recorded on video there.

One major rule of that show was that all acts had to sing live, no exception, only music playback was allowed. Some of below videos are from that show, so this means they sang live on these videos.. Clips below from that show have Hitparade somewhere in their title/description, that's how to spot them. Most of the time there was also no big budget for music videos, so if a group had its own music video it was most of the time really cheaply produced, which today is part of the charme of that era.

To give you some starting points, here are some of the well known acts of that era:

I prefer the original from by Nik Kershaw from the UK. Typically 80s video and lyrics which make no sense.

I still have the one I grew up with somewhere. Even still have the bag. Just... can't find it at the moment. While looking, I found my Armatron! =^-^=

this italian hit by Adriano Celantano (a hit in many european countries) doesn't sound so light-hearted today in corona times....

A party on the meadows
A beautiful company
Sandwiches, wine, a load of laughs
And bright glances of girls falling in love
What a beautiful day
we are all good friends
But who knows why tomorrow this may end
I want to know why tomorrow we have to hate each other

......
No, it must not end
This beautiful ride
Must last for an entire life
If there's a race
Only that of love

So I give you my hand, and you give it,
two times to me, and I give it,
three times to you, till there's energy to keep loving until

Adriano Celentano with Prisencolinensinainciusol from 1972 - or when Italians pretend to speak English, while they do not. It is considered to be one of the first rap song ever in history.
