Eggy was ranting one day about a cliff near his hometown that tourists keep falling over trying to take selfies. There are signs and chains and entries in the guide explaining that the ledge is misleading and more dangerous than it appears. But people keep trying.

It’s the ones who don’t die trying to get the perfect selfie, but get require rescuing that really piss me off. Not only are they taking valuable first responder resources out of circulation for hours, but sometimes the first responders have to risk their own lives trying to save these idiots stuck on a cliff, or the worst are those in winter who cross into backcountry avalanche areas and are shocked when their quest for powder buries them alive.

Conclusion:
“No selfie zones” areas should be declared across tourist areas especially places such as water bodies, mountain peaks, and over tall buildings to decrease the incidence of selfie-related deaths.

I would like to see a cost/benefit analysis based on the risk of death according to their numbers.

OMG my brother did this exact same thing when he was a little kid. He got his head stuck between the window bars, I thought we were going to have to cut his ears off to get him out. We greased him up with Crisco and with great screaming and pulling he finally came loose.

I wonder if this kind of thing is avoidable if you want to have any kind of culture that is willing to question authority, especially when what authority says contradicts their own observations. I suspect it's not.

What I mean by their own observations is, for every person who died trying to get that selfie, there were a thousand people who took the same risk and not only didn't die, but were able to post their selfies to the web where other people could see them and see, with their own eyes, that you can do that thing without dying.

And it goes for every context, too. All the amazing tornado footage taken by people who decided to ignore warnings - I mean there's just so, so much of it - is the reason why when a tornado warning siren goes off today, like 99% of people who hear it instead of running to their basements will grab their phone and run outside into the weather.
