English sucks and never makes any sense. I'm glad I learned it as a native speaker because holy crap I feel sorry for anyone trying to learn it as an adult.
Of course I will never be able to write English literature, but learning English as a second language to a reasonable degree (meaning to be able to communicate in that language) really wasn't that hard at all for me.
English is quite a logical language for the Dutch, Germans, Danes and Swedes.

Building on your earlier observation about H, I've heard both "a historic occasion" and "an historic occasion".
"H" is tricky because it can blend into a following vowel sound (hour) or it can be a distinct consent sound (historic) which is even more complicated because some English dialects drop "H" sounds from time to time. In this case, the rule is whatever floats your goat.

Just remember: pie is not a type of cake, and vice versa. THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

I'm still waiting (12 years and counting) to hear someone in Oregon say that. Troy swears it's still used here but mostly by folks out in the sticks. Guess we aren't far enough out in the sticks yet. :giggle:

I don’t consider “Y’all” and “Yous” to be bad grammar. They are patching a problem with english and I commend that.
I had family that grew up in Chicago. One of them used Youse all the time., only in verbal form, of course, not written. It was so odd to me, to hear that despite also being in the midwest, and I don't really hear it among younger Chicagoans (She was aged,, as she was my great aunt). It may have been a function of both her time period and location. Even though a northerner, I am partial to y'all.

So... an young and a young person are both technically correct although only a young person sounds correct.
That happens because Y doesn't represent just a sound, but it's used arbitrarily to represent different sounds. A vocalic sound ( as in myth pronounced /mɪθ/ ), a diphthong (my /m/) but also sounds that aren't really vocals Young /jʌŋ/ or Yes /jɛs/ . You could imagine those words written as: meeth, mi, joung. Thus: "a joung"... That's why "a young person" sounds correct.

That's another one that the meaning has changed with time. Video games.

This is what we always called video games:

On the one hand, it can be annoying. On the other hand, semantic drift is how languages evolve and grow. And on the gripping hand, if the alternative is an Academie de France type situation, I can live with literally meaning figuratively.

One problem of this sort of thread is to make sure you are speaking perfect language according to a professor or to be mocked (and not care).
