A First Look at Timothée Chalamet in Dune

This is the first look at Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides on his native planet of Caladan from this December’s film version of the novel, directed by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. The 1965 book was so seismic in its influence that its echoes still turn up in sci-fi and fantasy storytelling half a century later. Still, it has stubbornly defied appropriate adaptation itself.

Tomorrow, Vanity Fair will provide an even more expansive exploration of Villeneuve’s quest to bring Dune to the screen, but today we begin with the central hero: Paul Atreides, a child of privilege raised by a powerful family, but not one strong enough to protect him from the dangers that await.

Sorry, I'll look at this newcomer, but I simply must always hold a special place in my heart for this great actor who delivered this stellar line:

I love the scene between the Baron and Duke Leto as Leto remembers "the tooth," and the aftermath.

But from the book. The film took most the life from it, and I don't even recall it from the SYFY mini-series.

That movie set my ways to pronounce things until the sci fi channel film. Ironically it also meant I did not pronounce the baron's family name as the finnish name it was a misspelling of ... and then that was changed about the time of reading the first prequel ... and I quickly went back to how I pronounced it before when that character showed his true colours.

Yeah Chalamet's voice still grates on my last nerve but I'll probably watch it anyway. Wonder how closely the storyline follows the book(s)? We will see.

I kind of like the *look* of the shields.

The ornithopters we see are straight out of my own imagination.

And that shot of the worm...whoa.

Everything else - it's really hard to tell.

The actor who plays Peter De Vries says Villeneuve will honor everything in the novel which is over the top. But I accept that the director loves the source material (I've seen a couple interviews with him where he talks about the books in depth), and knowing that, hope they found a way to capture the essence of Herbert's work.

The training scene between Paul and Gurney (0:50), and then with Duncan's fight (1:34). You can see it better in the first bit. It's comes off as a blue-ish shimmer effect.

The actor who plays Peter De Vries says Villeneuve will honor everything in the novel which is over the top.

Peter Jackson told the same lie while shooting the LotR movies... not gonna buy it again.

The shields remind me of the personal nucleic shields that the Foundation developed on Terminus. Didn’t see any weirding modules in the Trailer. That’s a good sign.
