Heute in welt.de: Hat Europa Fehler beim Impfstoffeinkauf gemacht? – Eine Bilanz

Sorry for the message in German.
Me bad.
Google Translate is your friend :)

Essentially what happened in the EU is that the major players (Germany, France, et. al.) wanted negotions to happen at the EU level to get the best prices and terms, and for reasons of equity (have countries vs have-not countries). It would not look good if Germany went on its own as it would spur anti-German sentiment. Vacination all across the E.U. has been slow - some western EU countries haven't even started vacinating yet, and some Germans are asking if Germany should have negotiated separate deals in order to vacinate everyone faster. In total the EU has secured 2 billion doses, but vacination rates per capita are slower than in the U.S. Also, because of both price and infrastructure reasons, even though they have commitments for six different vaccines, they were expecting the one that doesn't require special refigerated handling to be developed first. Countries like Poland and Bulgaria probably have limitations in how they can store vacines requiring special storage requirements.

Has anyone written yet if there will be a delay because of the changeover of administrations?
Not any more of a delay than has already happened. The drug companies are shipping directly to locations that the various states have given them. From there it goes to hospitals, clinics, etc. What the Biden administration can do is invoke the Defense Production Act and get suppliers to make as many vials, vaccine ingredients, etc. so the drug companies can ramp up production higher. Maybe order more refrigerators using the money in the COVID relief bill.

This, assuming the original report is correct, makes no sense:
Wisconsin Public Radio reports Gerol couldn't submit proof to the court that the drugs had been damaged and therefore a crime had been committed.

"And apparently the only way they can discover that or tell us that is if they test them. It's unknown how much time that will take," Gerol said, according to the outlet.

The Moderna vials must be stored between 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit. They can remain effective for up to 12 hours if left at room temperature. Beyond that, the drug maker says it is no longer effective.
The vaccine is licenced on very strict conditions, and failure to adhere to those conditions mean that it cannot be used. The defendant knew this, which is why he deliberately left them out of the fridge overnight, thus deliberately rendering them as useless -- that is, not able to be used to vaccinate people -- as if he had contaminated them with poison.

The damage was done after they'd been left out of the fridge for too long. That's why he took them out of the fridge in the first place.

What's to be tested?

See, all this crap starts with BS like "Ancient Aliens" and "America Unearthed" and pop-conspiracy trash that people justify putting and leaving on the air and on the net because it's "harmless entertainment".

It's NOT harmless. These shows and websites literally alter how people think, and give them something very close to an artificially-induced reference delusion. Conspiratorial thinking is....not sure what you would call it. "Internally contagious"? Basically, believing in one brand of pop-conspiracy garbage literally makes you more susceptible to believing other brands, until next thing you know what started as a "harmless" interest in pulp-TV pseudodocumentaries about government UFO coverups leads you down a path where you end up in prison for sabotaging vaccines in the middle of a freaking global pandemic because YouTube told you the vaccines are a conspiracy to turn people into freaking alien-human hybrids.

Intelligent, educated people fall into this trap, not just idiots.

Also historical conspiracy theory nonsense popularised by the Da Vinci Code which is a novelisation of some actual crackpot theories, to the extent the originators of the theory sued Dan Brown for plagiarism. And, or course, the whole business of discovering that current events were, in fact, prophesied in the Bible. Or the Bermuda Triangle, of course, or identifying the Whitechapel murderer.

Maybe only to be expected, but depressing nevertheless

So we need to adjust our expectations, and parts of the media need to spend less time trying to find who is to blame. (Saw a hit piece on Andrew Cuomo on Tufekci's twitter feed. She dislikes Cuomo. Waste of energy reading that article. Plans were made in New York to distribute basically unlimited amounts of vaccine county by county without need for cold-chain distribution. In reality they don't have unlimited supplies, time, or adequate refrigeration, so they have to improvise.)

The burst of optimism that arrived with approvals of new vaccines – encouraged by unrealistic expectations raised by politicians – is colliding with the reality of the challenge of vaccinating a large part of the world’s population.

I wish the news media would admit they share some of the responsibility for unrealistic expectations.

ETA: The news media is a bit like Trump here: create a problem then take credit for solving it.

First question: assuming that distribution is up to individual states, what sort of extra funding is available from the federal government?

From what I've read about the vaccination programme over here, it's a huge logistical effort, and we have the advantage that it's all coordinated and funded nationally, and delivered through a unified National Health Service (and distances are far smaller than in the US, of course, and population density far higher, so everyone's easier to reach).

The Guardian article notes that the problems are occurring across the world. The article you posted is about how this is a difficult problem, and people have unrealistic expectations.

When the narrative news media was pushing was about the development of vaccines, they ignored the problems of getting it into people. They could have raised the obvious questions. Didn't happen.

There is funding in the bill that just passed last week, so the earmarked money came after the roll-out started. Before that, there were no specific funds, but a number of state and federal agencies were using their existing funds for distribution.

When I saw that my home location was the worst in Virginia, I looked closer at how I'd end up getting the vaccine. I'm no where close to the front of the line. So I'd been waiting to look to see how things worked.

Looked at various websites. One pointed out that I can get it, eventually, through the place I get the flu-shot, and that it will be free.

When will vaccines be available for the general population?

We anticipate vaccines will be available for the general population through our more than 9,000 stores sometime in spring 2021.
What will be the cost of the vaccine?
The COVID-19 vaccine will be available at no cost to those receiving it.
I get my medicine, and get my flu-shot, from Walgreens. The quotes above are from their website.
COVID-19 FAQs | Walgreens Newsroom

So now I just need to hide from people until something like March/April/May 2021.
