And Kev's reaction seems to be more about Anne Applebaum's summary of the piece rather than the article's conclusions (if there are any).
I dunno. I mean, British prisons are full of people with "profound personal problems and mental illness."

Nevertheless, I think that's the best place for many of them, at least for want of anywhere more suitable, but that doesn't prevent my acknowledging their difficulties -- knowing your enemy is important, after all.

So, I read this long article/opinion piece from soneome watching all this happen and they were talking about how all these people were obviously poor rural folks who think they are the real america...

And this morning, I realized that this must be more utter crap, up there with antifa doing it. Because who knew chicago CEO were poor farmers?

Or hell, that Knoxville is rural.

I'd wager, looking at ages and shit, that these were mostly affluenza sufferers, radicalized by being told that women should serve them, and so should anyone who isn't like them.

And seriously? Rock guitarists of note aren't poor farmers either.

No, that's not what I am talking about here.

Anne Applebaum is a "journalist." I don't know much about her specifically, but with many American reporters it's become a lazy framing technique for them to focus on the problems - mental, sociological, personal, whatever - of white, usually conservative Americans who've done something wrong but otherwise, at least from a superficial appraisal of their life, appear to be upstanding and/or successful people. The goal of course is to draw out a sympathetic picture.

People like Ashli Babbitt may be suffering from "profound personal problems and mental illness" - or then again they may not. There isn't a word in the WP article about her state of mind being affected by anything beyond acceptance of the lies of President Trump, Lin Wood and QAnon. Her ongoing business problems are nothing new to a large swath of Americans, the vast majority of whom didn't storm into the Capitol on Wednesday.

Right, these were, I'd guess, rich and well off fuckers slumming to make it look like a real grassroots movement, and not rich people starting shit. Besides, how do you get poor schlubs to join a 'revolution' [coup]? Not by being rich fuckers [unless you're cheetoliniwtf?] so, they are pretending to be salt of the earth types.

The more details I read, the more harrowing this seems. I was unaware of what was happening at several state capitol protests.
I was as freaked out when they breached Inslee's gates as I was at the stuff going on in DC. Fortunately, it was soon obvious it wasn't as dangerous a situation - this time. I am very worried that starting on the 17th we're going to see State Capitols and Governor's mansions under siege across the country. I hope they have the National Guard ready to go.

I've no doubt that Trump would still have the unwavering support of his 'evangelical televanglistic' cabal of parasites.... but it would have been entertaining to watch them vomit up mountains of blatant hypocrisy trying to justify how an adulterous man who likely has never cracked open a bible, much less read one... was some how doing god's work, by having his goons lynch a devout, righteous, god-fearing vice president.

All you'd have to do is look at the last four+ years for an idea of what they would do or say. When Trump said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose any supporters, he was off the mark. In reality, he can let 363,00+ of us die, he can have us beaten and gassed, he can send his cultists in to murder representatives (including ,and perhaps especially, his own vp that he all but branded as a traitor). Not only has he not lost them, he's gaining more.

America is sick, very very unwell.

I encourage everyone to follow the work of Jared Yates Sexton, an author and professor at Georgia State University. He's been writing about all of this for years and I've found him very insightful. He's also not afraid to call recent events exactly what they are: treason and fascism.

Helena Duke, 18, thought it was odd when her mom shut off her location on a phone-tracking app that they share earlier this week. Her mom, Therese Duke, had told her vaguely that she was taking Helena’s aunt for a procedure. But Helena suspected that her Trump-supporting mom may have secretly traveled to Washington, DC, for the delusional last-ditch "Stop the Steal" rally.

On Thursday morning, Helena's cousin had sent her a viral video of a physical encounter on the streets of DC filmed Tuesday, the night before the Capitol was raided.

Watching the clip, Helena identified her mom, her aunt Annie Lorenz, and her uncle Richard Lorenz as part of a group of white people confronting a Black woman who had hit Therese in the face after she had tried to grab her.

"My initial reaction was more like, Oh my gosh, I was right. I was actually right about them being there," Helena told BuzzFeed News. "It was very surreal because it was an insane video, first of all, and then it was the revelation that, Oh, that’s my mother. That’s her."

It is disturbing to see the number of references to mental illness as a source for these violent behaviours. On the one hand, it can make individuals suffering with a mental illness targets for retaliation and scorn, as centuries of stigma has already shown. On the other hand, I've seen some social messaging try to soften the violence of the clearly 'wicked' as sick, as perhaps some way to avoid due punishment for their criminal behaviours.
Mad or Bad? Long term debate has swirled about this topic. Many studies have shown over time that the best predictor of violence is past history of violence. The root of all violence and mob madness is NOT mental illness. Yes, some people with delusional or hallucination experiences may react with aggression, but more people with mental illness symptoms and hardships are ATTACKED, not attackers. Inciting riots, insurrections, mob madness by preying on social vulnerabilities, and stoking hatred and racism is EVIL.
