We had 3 regional heatwaves already this summer and it is only end of july. Normal is less than one per summer on average.
So no, nothing new to be seen on the climate front.
We are lucky with the wild fires so far. But man, do Spain and France have problems this year.

Yep, I have a lot of European friends, and all of them complained about the heat a lot. I of course felt bad for them, but am also worried the demand for AC will explode over there. ...this will of course explode European energy usage which of course will make the root cause even worse. HURRAY for a death spiral!

So yeah... maybe this kind of shit will bring more political attention to actually do something about climate change a good 60(?) years or so after it's too late to really turn the ship around.

Forget turning the ship around. It is not only a political problem.
People seem not to be able to grasp that it takes far more effort from each and everyone than sorting our garbage in a few nice piles. We keep driving, flying, cruising, buy stuff from the other side of the continent or even the world. At the Dutch airports and harbors alone arrive more than 1.1 billion webshop packages from outside the EU (mainly from China) every year.

Only chance humanity has, is trying to adapt to the changes IMHO and that will not be easy.

As an example: The Netherlands is a country that had to concentrate on how to keep the water out for centuries, both from the sea as from the rivers.
Now we have problems keeping our dykes safe and enough water available to do that. They are mainly made of big chunks of granite or basalt covered with layers of clay and other soils. Because it doesn't rain enough, combined with the for our country extensive heat and the fact the rivers have extreme low water levels, the clay gets too dry and starts to crack. We possibly need many fingers to put in the dykes when the rivers start to rise in the fall.

Despite my intense curiosity about the ongoing story of climate change and humanities future, I still wanted to die wondering, as in die before everything started falling apart. When the projections were "bad things will start happening by 2050" I was on solid footing for a comfortable exit. That timeline is shortening fast. People saying we'll be in bad shape by 2030 are still likely to be called "doomers" with a curled lip, but I'm not so sure they're that far wrong.

On the plus side (such as it is), it won't take much chaos and deprivation to knock me off, so I won't suffer for long if climate change targets my area for intense anything. I'm barely getting by with A/C.

I'll get to the climate change part of this post eventually, but it turns out that climate change is intermingled with my marriage in what I expect is a very typical way. My husband has been convinced that we should move to where a friend of his has moved: the coast of Delaware, 3,000 miles away, because of climate change. He's convinced because his friend has been right until this year: Delaware has seemed to sit between disastrous weather to the south and north. This year, my NYTimes weather alarm reports that things are not so copacetic in Delaware this year.

During this same period, things have been very worrisome to minor disasters here in Central Coastal California. The last two years have been fine, though. What's my point? Nowhere is safe, nowhere will have weather that can be trusted to be as it was historically. That's why I refuse to move. Places we've considered: Canada? Partly burning. The Northwest (Oregon, Washington, British Columbia)? Burning. Western Europe. Burning and alternately flooding. Nowhere is safe. There is no place on Earth that things will be safe from climate-change caused disaster.

We can get an electric car as easily in California as anywhere else. We can obtain solar power more readily here. Because many of his friends have decamped from California, he believes we should. I don't. I see no refuges anywhere from the global disaster we continue to create. As Beebo has suggested above, we Boomers have our ultimate refuge at hand: that we'll die before things go more seriously to hell. It's not a pretty thought for what we're leaving our children.

We all live in a shooting gallery and it's anyone's guess what will happen in any given area on any given timeline. There are some obvious places NOT to live -- as in coastal communities that are prone to being hit by hurricanes and rising sea levels -- but every region has something to worry about.

We are actually pretty safe in the North Central U.S. It's a little hotter and more miserable and winters are shorter, sometimes dropping more precip, and we get enough smoke from Canadian fires to make the eyes sting, but most of the time we're not that bad off. Winter is still the NO FUN zone but that's always been that way.
