Donny in his latest rants is fixated with the FBI photo, seeming to believe that the FBI's purpose in spreading the documents on the floor in order to photograph them was to falsely imply that they just walked into the room and found the documents all over the floor like that. There's no reason to think that of course - the FBI has been very straightforward that the documents were found in boxes and in Trump's desk - but by golly that's what he's running with.

Or that he's so disorganised and careless of his responsibilities that he simply pulls papers out of files, glances at them,, and tosses them back into a heap somewhere rather than bothering to refile them.

If he'd given away the documents, why not give them away in the folder, or destroy the folder after giving away the document?

Honestly I don't know - but, I do know that a person can fold a half dozen sheets of paper and shove them into his suit-jacket pocket and walk out of the room without anyone seeing he's carrying them, while a folder would make that tough; it might even be tough to smuggle the empty folders out to destroy them - they couldn't do it inside the storage room, there likely isn't like trash cans in there.

If you don't ever expect anyone to come looking for them, there's not really any pressing need to destroy or dispose of them.

After months of negotiations, Trump turned over 15 boxes of materials in January, detailed in the affidavit released recently that was meant to justify the FBI search on Aug. 8. When the archivists examined them, their internal alarm bells went off.

“Of most significant concern was that highly classified records were unfoldered, intermixed with other records, and otherwise unproperly identified,” NARA wrote to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The boxes included “a lot of classified records,” mixed in with newspaper clippings, personal records and other unimportant papers. Some of the “presidential records” had been torn up, which Trump was known to do when he was finished with a paper. But if someone tears up any official document, that violates a federal law that prohibits concealing, removing or “mutilating” documents.

Trump’s laissez-faire manner of handling documents was apparent even before he left the presidency. He would tear up papers to signal a discussion was over, or famously flush notes down the toilet. Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, told Reuters recently that Trump would keep “piles and piles” of documents inside the White House dining room.

The classified records in the boxes, mixed in with the clippings and so on, must originally have been in matching file-folders, which are presumably now empty -- quite possibly the investigators will be able to match some of the orphaned records in the boxes with their folders.

I'm not trying to excuse his behaviour, but I'm cautious about going beyond what we actually know about the way he handled the documents, which is bad enough.

If it later transpires that some of the folders can't be matched to any surviving documents, that's the time to start worrying.

Folder marked ‘classified’ apparently on display at Trump's 45-themed bar

Tucked in the lobby of Manhattan’s Trump Tower is a bar called 45 Wine and Whiskey. At this Hard Rock Cafe knockoff, visitors can enjoy walls plastered with Trump presidential memorabilia that was likely snuck out of the White House—including a folder marked “classified.”
