People vote for political parties and candidates for all sorts of reasons, and I'd think that's particularly the case with Trump, since he has slogans that can mean whatever you want them to, rather than policies, with which you might agree or disagree.

So to my mind, the phrase "Trump supporters" is a simple descriptor -- people who, for whatever reason, express or demonstrate a degree of support for Donald Trump.

That might be because they like the tax cuts he's given them, or it might be because, since he expresses their prejudices, they think he understands them and their needs better than do the Democrats, or for any other sort of reason.

What they have in common, to my mind, is that, for whatever reason, they are prepared to tolerate both him and his administration.

This fascination really got going with the AM radio shows that started broadcasting in the 1980's. People talk about FOX, but these radio shows (often radio stations that broadcast little else) led the way. Also, people did not have to be rural or poor to listen in.

That's how Murdoch developed the product -- his strategy has always been to identify a gap in the media market that's completely unfilled, and he saw that there was a huge potential market for an unashamedly-right wing infotainment channel catering to the same people who listened to talk radio. He couldn't offer that on broadcast media, but he could on cable, and the rest is history.

The rebulican primaries in NH pointed that out. In two counties someone ran unopposed for sheriff and their proposal was anti-police but they got votes simply because they put an r down.

An US presidency should be only for proven political professionals. Maybe the Reps and the Dems could make it a party law that one has to be at least a political active member with political experience in public offices for at least 10 years, before they can run for their party.

A lot of aid to rural areas has been grossly ineffective, in part because the conservative representatives from these areas are resisting the very programs that would provide meaningful help and economic opportunity. Boosting education, providing unemployment and welfare, food aid, infrastructure spending, and rural healthcare are the exact parts of the budget that their representatives are against. Biden wants to boost both rural clinics and trade schools, while increasing infrastructure spending that feeds construction jobs. Look for the people whose voters would benefit the most to block those programs out of fear of "socialism" and partisan spite.

Interesting point and very true. My opinion of this is that most of the people in these areas are very religious because they have to be. It's the only way they can get any help and have a connection to the community. The "help" that they get though is what forms the opinions that they have. In many areas, the "leaders (representatives)" were also leaders in the church. I think that their fear, is that if social programs are allowed then church attendance will drop or end. They [right wing religion] are holding people hostage so that they are dependent on the church. Big church is big business. I've seen this in Idaho and Montana and even the rural part of Canada where I grew up.

Also, what Jolene said: It is true that they have romanticized the image of the "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" sort of person. The tough cowboy image. Certainly I can see that romanticization with my brother. He sees himself as someone like the Marlboro man. He views my younger brother as a "sissy" because he finished college and he sees me as an over educated housewife. He actually called me that once. Even though I've spent 35 years in a career working 10 to 12 hours a day. Even though I love him, opinions like this sometimes frustrate me so much I want to punch him. What makes it more frustrating is that he's really smart, but he refuses to embrace or accept that part of himself because of that image.

That attitude is closely allied with the fear that education estranges young people from their family's values and morals. That is, sadly, a valid fear because education and exposure to a wider world will often result in a change in perspective, away from the narrow world-view of one's birth family. So that resistance to higher education is reinforced.

That goes hand in hand with the disdain for science as well, I think, or any other highly educated discipline. It's why they can dismiss climate change, listen to Trump tell them that Covid is nothing worse than the flu, and so on. Combine that with their chosen forms of media whether that be traditional tv or online and it gets reinforced.
