A Melania Trump event is being investigated after promising to donate proceeds to a charity that doesn't appear to exist, report says

A charity event set to be hosted by Melania Trump in Florida is being investigated after organizers said a portion of its proceeds would go to a charity that doesn't appear to exist, The New York Times reported over the weekend.

The organizers have said the "high tea" event in April in Naples "will benefit Fostering the Future, a Be Best initiative" that "will grant computer science scholarships to those aging out of the foster care system."

Regular tickets cost $3,000, and VIP tickets cost $50,000. It's unclear what percentage of the proceeds would go to charity.

The Times reported that no charity with the name Fostering the Future or Be Best was registered in Florida, though Florida law requires organizations soliciting donations in the state to be registered.

Basically, the Miami-Dade court typoed their website on forms they were sending out to ticketed drivers. Someone took advantage of the typo and set up a site selling Trump merch.

Neither he nor any of the family is yet under criminal investigation, I think, or at least not in this matter, which is a criminal investigation into civil action against the Trump Organisation as a corporate body.

It may well be, and quite probably is, the case that truthful answers to the questions Letitia James wants to ask him and the children, and a close examination of the documents they have been ordered to produce, could lead to criminal charges against individual members of the Trump family, which the prosecution would then have to prove, but that's some way along the line.
