There are moments that I think the best solution is to ship the UK to the middle of the Atlantic. Sigh.
It will take some effort but only the best of the best for the UK's finest political filosophers.
This thread confirms what I'd been told by people who know Singapore -- that is, the place the Brexiteers know as Singapore is as real as Shangri-la, Xanadu or (perhaps more appropriately) the Plateau of Leng.

EU offers to reduce Northern Ireland border checks to ‘a couple of lorries a day’

The EU has initiated a fresh attempt to end the Northern Ireland Brexit dispute with the UK with a proposal to reduce checks on goods crossing the Irish Sea to a near “invisible manner” involving just “a couple of lorries” a day.

Maroš Šefčovič, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, said physical checks would be made only “when there is a reasonable suspicion of illegal trade smuggling, illegal drugs, dangerous toys or poisoned food”.

What could go wrong, eh?
That's what happened in the early years of the EU too, when we were only six countries working together.
Lorry drivers needed to have their paperwork ready, give a copy to the customs officer and than most of them were waived trough.
Occasionally a lorry would be checked. Most of the times ad random.

Another example: Currently only 1.3 percent of the incoming containers from all over the world that enter the port of Rotterdam are closely checked by customs.
The sheer amount of work would bring the port down on its knees if they would check each container.

Well, to be honest after Brexit I only ordered one thing from the UK.
It took more than a week to be delivered. According to track and trace it lay for three days at a Belgium port to be cleared by customs.

Here in NL we are spoiled, we expect goods to arrive the day after ordering, two days waiting time at most. Half of the time same day delivery is possible with bol.com (the Dutch equivalent of Amazon).
The advantages of a small sized country.
Goods shipped from Germany or France take a day longer. Goods from the UK forever and a day nowadays.

Another aspect
I just read a report that there are delivery problems for about 250 medicines here in Germany. Globalised production is seen as the main (but not the only) reason for this. Many medicines are produced in India or China. For various reasons, the supply chains here break down more often. I remember that some time ago there were (and still are?) big difficulties with the delivery of various products that are equipped with CHIPS....and there are or have been several other products with delivery problems espec. from asia
These difficulties have led to increasing demands (and some have already been implemented) for the production of important parts to be relocated back to the EU.
If the large economic area of the EU already has such difficulties in getting to grips with these problems, the UK will have even greater difficulties, as the Brexit has made the UK even more dependent on a functioning globalised economy despite all the "taking back control" slogans.
