I'm confused. I thought they used kilometres in the UK, and the US were the backward ones with miles and feet and things?
Since Brexit, I've suspected that many in the UK have been regressing precipitously.

Thankfully not VV.1's brit crew... :p

Actually no. The UK is the only country in the world which has a really weird mix of imperial and metric units in paralleluse. Road distances are in miles, car speeds/speed limits are in MPH only, flat/house sizes in square feet.

They also have gallons and pints, which are though different from the US counterparts. Weights then are in gram/kilogram though. It is mindblowing complicated.

Look at the rules for cricket or snooker or even tennis.....
If it is complicated, then it is British.

Mornington Crescent.

At least they managed to reform their currency back then, which was penny, shilling and pound.
Australia did that too, but mapping pennies to cents and shillings to 10 cents, allowing for some amusing schoolboy arbitrage involving trading 10c coins for shillings, turning them into 12 pennies, and then converting the pennies to cents, and ending up with 12 cents for a 10c coin. It rarely never worked more than once. Shopkeepers quickly adapted.

In England don't they use weight for cooking, instead of volume?

In aviation, altitude is always measured in feet, in every country.

I've always cooked by weight, certainly, for anything that isn't liquid and can't be measured in tea- or dessert spoons full, unless I'm cooking rice (because I learned Indian cooking by volume).

Measurements in the UK are completely straightforward. :catspin:

We buy petrol by the litre and measure fuel consumption in miles to the gallon.
Road distances are measured in miles, footpath distances in kilometres. I've even seen both units on the same signpost in a national park.
In a pub we buy beer and cider by the pint or half pint and everything else in metric. In a shop beer and cider are sold in metric short measures. (Typically 500ml compared with 568ml in a pint).
Horses are measured in hands, race lengths in furlongs and prize money in guineas.

Simples!

And two week blocks in fortnights. Makes perfect sense.

He has a lot of followers for an April this year account. 🍿
Maybe his book series has a good following? Looks like he writes about a lot of comics and sci-fi stuff. There are a lot of nerds out there, lol.
Myself included. Hadn't heard of him before, but I don't read much "history of" .

I should move to Canada... it's really a boring country I do live in, only using metric units.

Canada is full of geniuses though, because you know how they say: just idiots do need order, but geniuses have mastered the chaos!
