So this newspaper - the New Hampshire Union Leader - once known as the Manchester Union Leader - such a rock solid bed of right wing, conservative, Republicanism as there ever was that they hadn't endorsed a non-Republican for more than a hundred years until 2016, when they gave it to the Independent candidate Gary Johnson (yeah...) - did this:

In a significant shift since 2000, the GOP has taken to demonising and encouraging violence against its opponents, adopting attitudes and tactics comparable to ruling nationalist parties in Hungary, India, Poland and Turkey.

The shift has both led to and been driven by the rise of Donald Trump.

By contrast the Democratic party has changed little in its attachment to democratic norms, and in that regard has remained similar to centre-right and centre-left parties in western Europe. Their principal difference is the approach to the economy.

The new study, the largest ever of its kind, was carried out by the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, using newly developed methods to measure and quantify the health of the world’s democracies at a time when authoritarianism is on the rise.

Anna Lührmann, V-Dem’s deputy director, said the Republican transformation had been “certainly the most dramatic shift in an established democracy”.

I lived in New Hampshire for most of the 1990s. I got to read the Union-Leader more than once along with its liberal-leaning counterpart, the Nashua Telegraph (now just The Telegraph). I can say this without hesitation: the Union-Leader was a rag then, and it's undoubtedly even more of a rag now.

I read that whole editorial. Talk about damning with faint praise - especially that oh-so-conspicuous asterisk:

* While Joe Biden is the clear choice for president, it would be a disservice to the country to send him to the White House without a backstop. We suggest splitting the ballot and electing a healthy dose of GOP senators and representatives. The best governance often comes through compromise. The civility of the Biden administration will help foster such compromise, but a blue wave would be nearly as disastrous for this country as four more years of Trump. It would result in a quagmire of big government programs that will take decades to overcome.

Yeah, ok guys. You haven't changed a bit. You do you. The Union-Leader is in the same category as the Lincoln Project: they're not our friends. "The civility of the Biden administration will help foster such compromise [...]" Yeah right.

I remember the crud from the Manchester Union Leader mainly from when I participated in a large anti nuclear demonstration in Seabrook, NH in 1977. It was at a future site of a nuclear power plant. At the time there was nothing there but dirt and a handful of 4 foot wide and 6 foot long concrete tubes. They arrested all 1414 of us anyway and threw us into National Guard armories for two weeks. They would have liked to have thrown us all into jail but all the jails in the state only held 600 people including the people already there.

On to this year. The Union Leader still wants nuclear power. Such colorful descriptions.

It was pointed out this past week that in New Hampshire, highly subsidized mountaintop wind turbines are routinely licensed to kill large numbers of migrating and otherwise protected birds.

Meanwhile, early this morning an uncontrolled thermo-nuclear reaction occurred almost unnoticed when the sun rose. We have learned how to replicate a version of the sun’s power generation. It is ultra clean environmentally, with zero greenhouse gases, but superstitiously unacceptable.

A Seabrook Unit II could miniaturize this sun-like power and replace the avian abattoirs to the north while gracefully retiring the 18th century coal trains to our south. But teaching logic in our schools has been replaced with a new earth science.
What a brave new world.

Just a reminder as I do know that folks here are conscientious; If you voted by mail or by absentee ballot, you can go online and check it's status. For example, I checked mine, it lists the day it was turned in and that it has been accepted. Each state has a different site for doing so and it is probably most important in states that are actively working to deny ballots but I still think it's a good reminder for us all., when we still have an opportunity to fix any issues.

Raimondo, in her second term as governor, dazzled Biden’s campaign in interviews to become his vice president back in June. A former venture capitalist who took the governor’s mansion on the strength of millions of dollars in Wall Street donations, Raimondo’s name will stir the long memories of union leaders. They have held a grudge with her for years over her tenure as state treasurer, when she cut pension benefits for public employees, while steering over $1 billion in state money to hedge fund investments.

But recalling those hard feelings may be the point. One source theorized to the Prospect that leaking Raimondo’s name could make Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard, until now seen as the leading possibility for Treasury Secretary, seem more palatable. Brainard, who worked at Treasury under Tim Geithner, has been attempting to portray a more liberal public image as the decision approaches.

Progressives have endorsed other names for Treasury Secretary, the most prominent being Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Others being discussed include Atlanta Federal Reserve chair Raphael Bostic and former Fed and Treasury official Sarah Bloom Raskin.

Right-wing hoaxers Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman hit with felony charges in Cleveland tied to multi-state voter robocall campaign

The charges stem from a series of robocalls in which a caller claiming to be connected to Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman falsely claims that information on mail-in ballots can be used to track down outstanding warrants, debt and implement vaccines.

A grand jury in Cleveland on Tuesday indicted right-wing political hoaxers Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman with felony charges connected to a multi-state robocall campaign that prosecutors say was meant to scare voters in urban areas with large minority populations out of voting by mail in the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Wohl, 22, of Riverside, California, and Burman, 54, of Arlington, Virginia, are indicted on eight counts of telecommunications fraud and seven counts of bribery in connection with more than 8,000 calls that were placed to residents of Cleveland and East Cleveland.

Wohl and Burkman already face similar criminal charges in Michigan and a civil lawsuit in New York City connected to the same scheme.
