I've seen northern light once, many years ago.
It is beautiful to watch, especially if it is a rare phenomenon on the latitude I live.
Now I need a clear sky Wednesday evening.

I wonder if we could see this far south [it would take a miracle] I don't think I've ever seen them....

Spann says no. We were in Edmonton one Christmas and saw them there. Worth a trip.

My mom wants to take me to Alaska, though I'm not getting on a cruise until we have vaccines.

Definitely go when it's safe. Alaska, whales, glaciers, auroras, are one of the very few reasons I would live on a cruise ship for a few days. Boats are generally for getting to the other shore in my world. Those river cruises have my attention, though; might do that one day.

If anyone does not like Blackeyed Peas, feel free to send me yours. I usually have 4 or 5 servpings.

Is there a keto substitute?

Seriously, I know these are for good luck, but I'm also fairly sure that there are similar traditions with different foods.

Also, instead of Jan's new year, we need to do this for Chinese NY [and I think other asian cultures have theirs at the same time?] and Julian Calender NYs and Pagan NY..... maybe its just we're using the wrong NY date

If we use another calendar system, we run the risk of extending 2020 past December 31.
There's precedent. September 1993 lasted a decade. I'm not expecting March 2020 to be over until next July at the earliest.

It is the first time I hear about this tradition.
And to be honest I knew black eyed peas only like this until now:

It is an American South thing. Hoppin' John is a spicy black eyed peas dish. The peas are simmered with smoked pork ... usually a ham hock or bacon. Celery, onion, bell pepper - which Dakota probably knows is called Trinity. Herbs and some fairly hot pepper sauce, top with scallions and serve over rice. If you are hard core you serve it with collard greens. Very good and supposed to bring you good luck if eaten on New Years Day.

Interesting. I've had ham and black-eyed peas of course (courtesy of a southern friend, alongside other things like boiled peanuts in Alabama) but never knew about the link to New Year's Eve.

I'm game and echo what Soen said.
