I’m convinced this is it, that it’s really about white supremacy.
Georgia, where I live, will probably cross the 50% non-Hispanic white level in next year's census, making us a "majority minority" state. About 75% of the state's population growth is coming from the Atlanta metro. The city's growth is bringing in a diverse population from other places. So yeah, conservatives are fighting a rear-guard action when the numbers are against them.

Well, the Aussie federal election is all but done and dusted and the only question is, will the LNP win a slim majority, or will they form a minority government. Fucking fuckity fuck.

On the bright side, Warringah managed to oust Tony Abbot, so one of the most corrosive elements in Australian politics is gone baby gone. That's a minor victory however, all round it's a shit of a night.

And some Texas lawmakers are also rushing to get on the crazy train: Texas bill would allow death penalty for women who get abortions
To be fair, according to the report it seems even most Texas anti-abortion campaigners recognise this as legislative theatre and trolling:
The bill is also receiving push back from abortion opponents. Republican Rep. Jeff Leach, the committee chair, said he would not support any bill on abortion that makes women civilly or criminally liable and the antiabortion group Texans for Life also expressed their opposition to the bill.

The bill ended up failing to make it past the committee hearing, according to reports.
The reasoning of the bill's sponsor, State Rep Tony Tinderholt, is worth noting:
Tinderholt told the Texas Observer the bill is meant to "force" women to be "more personally responsible with sex."

"Right now, it’s real easy. Right now, they don’t make it important to be personally responsible because they know that they have a backup of ‘oh, I can just go get an abortion," Tinderholt said.

JFC...No exceptions, either. They hate women, and they sure don't love children as they don't give a fuck about them once born. Remember Texas refused the expand medicaid under the ACA.
It occurs to me, there's a sick, twisted reason these states are passing draconian anti-abortion laws that goes beyond giving white men power over women and their bodies in their respective states. They know full well these new laws will be challenged. They want that. They want these challenges brought all the way to the Supreme Court, freshly stacked with ultra-conservatives, in the hope of overturning Roe v. Wade once and for all.

Republicans fucking disgust me!

Fuck him. Fuck him with a whole fucking cactus AND a rusty screwdriver! I guess men don't have to be "more personally responsible with sex"?

I'm at a loss for words.

What the flying fuck is a "consensual rape"??? There is no such thing, other than being a Republican construct designed to exert control over women and their bodies!

To be fair, he claims it was a slip of the tongue.

The context makes that at least plausible:

It was on the issue of exceptions for rape victims that Hovis, a retired Cape Girardeau police lieutenant first elected to office in 2017, took his stand. He pointed out that "most of the rapes" that he saw in law enforcement didn't involve "gentlemen jumping out of bushes."

"Most of them were date rapes or consensual rapes," he continued, "which were all terrible, but I'd sit in court when juries would struggle with those situations, where it was a 'he-said-she-said,' which was unfortunate if it really happened."

Similarly, in the UK, the great majority of rape allegations involve not attacks by strangers but incidents in which the complainant and the defendant know each other, whether as friends, relatives or sexual partners, past or present, and there's hardly any dispute over the facts of the case other than the crucial issue of consent.

Without further information, I'd be prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt and accept his explanation.

Thanks for that explanation. It does make sense, although I have to wonder as to his state of mind, what he was thinking, when he made that slip. But while that may have been an honest slip of the tongue, I can't help but wonder how many right-wing nut jobs out there genuinely believe such a thing exists.

What’s clear to me is that none of these yo-yos really understand what consent is, or it would be *obvious* that being on a date with someone is not a kind of “partial consent.”

Considering the alarming lack of basic knowledge about female anatomy and about human reproduction and gestation in general displayed by many male Republican legislators, and the bizarre ideas about medical procedures some of them seem to have, ranging from why a late-term abortion is normally performed to one chap's idea I read recently that it would be a simple procedure, in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, to remove the embryo and reattach it to the wall of the uterus, it would not surprise me at all if some legislators thought consensual rape was a thing.

What’s clear to me is that none of these yo-yos really understand what consent is, or it would be *obvious* that being on a date with someone is not a kind of “partial consent.”
Yes, but I think he was trying to say that most rape investigations the police conduct concern complaints that the couple were out on a date and then afterwards, he wanted to have sex, she refused, but he ignored that and raped her rather than that the woman was out running when a stranger came out the bushes, forced her off the path, raped her and ran off.

Both happen, of course, but the former type of crime is the more frequent.

I don’t think this excuses him even a tiny bit. Most rapes are not “stranger rapes” and quite a few Republicans have been pushing the idea that’s really the only real rape. I think this is because they believe women are property, so raping your wife, daughter or girlfriend is not a real rape. In other words, their idea of what is really rape has nothing to do with consent.

In the same way, they’re perfectly comfortable with denying abortions to rape victims who are in a category of being owned by the rapist, since he owns both the woman and the potentially male infant.

The mistakes the Republicans keep making are uniform and consistent, matching not a thoughtfully argued theological idea of abortion, but a legal view of women that made female family members chattels.

I get that's what he's saying....but why does it even matter unless his point is that the former kind of rape isn't "really rape", compared to the latter? Remember the context of his comments originally here is that he was arguing AGAINST adding an exception for rape victims to the anti-abortion bill and this was supposed to be his reasoning for that. What is even the relevance of the fact that some rapes are "date rapes" to that conversation, unless it's to imply that it's wrong for victims of date-rape to want an abortion?

Without reading a transcript of the debate I don't know what point he was trying to make.

He could have been drawing attention to the practical problem that if there's an exemption for abortions in the case of rape, there's the practical issue of determining if any particular pregnancy is the result of rape when the issue is consent. In those cases, there's generally very little dispute about the facts of the case, save for the crucial issue of consent, and it's probably going to take the best part of a year, at least, before a jury gets to decide that.

In the meantime, what's supposed to happen to the woman and her pregnancy?
