As that tweet makes clear, they are a copaganda outlet for the ruling elite, and I just can't stomach their view of the world.

I'm not sure the Washington Post is that much better, but for some reason I've found it palatable and less snotty.
Additionally, it seems like in the past, they were a much more substantial operation with major investigational journalism. That's just my personal impression with nothing to back it up but it sure seems that way to me.

I find many more useful articles at The Washington Post too.

Some random nightmare pondering -

What if TFG got convicted and was sent to prison then ran for president anyway? Then if he won he pardoned himself?

The first time I canceled my NYTimes subscription was in the 1980s. I was a young (naive) adult, living in New York City, and I felt ever so sophisticated reading the Times every morning. One particular series of articles, however, finally crystallized for me the perspective of the paper. During a commuter train strike, they reported breathlessly on the harrowing experience of commuters forced to use public transport and even walk through poor neighborhoods. Hmm, kinda like my daily experience, which I had never considered to be unduly terrifying. I switched over to the Daily News, because I finally realized the Times did not consider me to be part of their readership.

Decades later, long after I'd moved away from the city, I took out an online subscription because there were so many Times articles of depth and interest. I still didn't trust them completely, and inevitably they would publish something that set me screaming and once again I would cancel. A year or two would pass by and I'd renew again, then leave. I think I'm gone for good this time around. I can't even remember the specific article that set me off, but it doesn't really matter. As that tweet makes clear, they are a copaganda outlet for the ruling elite, and I just can't stomach their view of the world.

NYT reminds me of my first media "hate": Time Magazine. So self-focused it's like "this isn't about me or my life", like when Time kept going on about "We're 50!" and it was all about upper middle class boomers, and we were all at Woodstock and we were all (or had close friends) at the Vietnam protests.

Too damn insular towards a certain class and lifestyle and global view, parachute journalism when they talked about anything else. No wonder the working class right feels like they're an enemy.

I've been using Google News for years, and have tailored the sources they show me stories from. I wish I could remove the Entertainment and Sports sections entirely, because I have no interest in them, but they removed that option in one of the updates. I do like dark mode, which I use whenever sites allow it. I have two large monitors and white backgrounds is like staring at floodlights.

I kind of work around issues like that by mentally making clear distinctions between things I subscribe to as a statement, and things I subscribe to for information. Like, my local newspaper. I'm lucky, my local newspaper is generally pretty decent, they have a bunch of pulitzers. They also have a fairly conservative editorial bent. I'll stay subscribed to that paper forever, though, no matter what stance they take, because nobody else is going to tell me what my town council is up to this week. I subscribe to the Wall St Journal for their information. Of course, they are going to advocate for everything I hate. They're the paper of record for the American aristocratic voice, but I still need their information.

While subscribed to these two outlets, I also subscribe to Mother Jones and The Nation. I rely on neither Mother Jones nor the Nation for important information, but I do like to support outlets who advocate for ideas I like. If either of them started hard core endorsing Biden right now, I'd cut them off in a heartbeat and find somebody I do agree with to support, because I hold them to stricter ideological standards than other outlets I subscribe to. I want my news journalists to show me everything, including unvirtuous ideas I don't like. I want my editorialists to spread virtue. I try not to confuse the two.

Stacey Abrams trending when I looked at Twitter. Most of the tests are like this :

And then there's Faux News and Republican pols:

(not giving them the views, so I linked to a tweet about it).

Also came across some really vile insults that price everything in the racism thread. Not going to repeat them here.

At 100,000 the NYT editors thought *they* might die; now they think it's just the disposable people who will. And they are ok with that.
We could make a whole new topic thread on bad takes from the NY Times. Here is an article from two experienced NY Times corespondents who say that the Jan 6 commission is dangerously aggressive and falls short of the standards set by the Congress' Benghazi Investigation (seriously):

As an example, part of their evidence is the large number of subpoenas that have been submitted. They even note that they are not necessary despite the explicit proclamations to not testify to the committee, and they conveniently leave out the part where the members of the Obama administration went out of their way to cooperate including the unprecedented, politically motivated grilling of the US Secretary of State. So this time it is the Democrats who are the problem and not the Republicans who are overtly stonewalling the committee.

Careful, there's some very sensitive nationalist Canadians around here who get all huffy when they see people bring up the convoy in Ottowa. One more example of what they don't like... they probably wouldn't like us talking about how we have video of the truckers in Ottowa taping the doors shut on an apartment building, and trying to burn it down, to kill as many residents as they could. Remember, they are attempting mass murder, not terrorism, because white people can't be terrorists. Only brown people get droned for this kind of thing. White people get counseling.

Someone on facebook posted a photograph of a letter in a newspaper asking people to wear a mask, and I posted a generic "this" kind of response, and three different people responded whining about how they wanted to get on with their life and how they were tired of the lockdowns and no matter how much I tried to tell them "I'm just asking them to wear a mask" and "there's no lockdowns in georgia (where the newspaper clipping was from)" they just wouldn't shut up about how I was demanding they stay in quarantine forever.

One of them was in Canada. Are they actually doing lockdowns up there? They sure as heck aren't doing them in the South.

Being Canadian, I am unaware of any current lockdowns in the country. Granted, it may depend on what is viewed as a lockdown - I personally interpret that term to mean complete restriction, curfews, no school or work, no public group activities, etc. Some folks see it as a few days self-isolation after travel or where they've been exposed to an active case. We have had periodic 50% restaurant and venue reductions, temporary closures of gyms and large arena events and such in various parts of the country when cases rose alarmingly and hospitals were at breaking point.

Currently (from news reports that I see), many areas are still requiring masks in public areas, reduced capacity in some venues when numbers of that particular region are escalating, and time-limited isolation for travel returns and/or covid exposures. Nationally and in most locales, public health information is highlighting the need for people to still get vaccinated if they haven't done so.

Not really. The closest to it here was the province half-ass restricted us to our provincial health regions. (Administrative districts for the local area, varying land areas, groupings of about a million people.) Remote communities with no significant medical presence full time have been unwelcoming to dipshits from out of town.
