Some Long Haul COVID Patients Are Feeling Better After Vaccination

Some people who've been laid low for months by so-called "long haul" symptoms after a coronavirus infection say that within days of getting their COVID-19 vaccine, those symptoms nearly disappeared.

Speaking with The New York Times, Bridget Hayward, a 51-year-old operating room nurse in Alexandria, Va., said that for nearly a year after first becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2, she's had a slew of devastating symptoms. They've included persistent body aches, fatigue, a feeling of being hot even in cool weather, and a "brain fog" that rendered remembering even simple words difficult.

"It was horrifying," she told the newspaper. "It was awful thinking it may never get better, like 'Is this my new normal, am I now damaged this way?'"

But then, just one day after her first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, everything changed.

"It was like, click, everything is fine," she said. Her body temperature has normalized and "it felt like a darkness lifted."

Anecdotal cases like this are popping up around the United States, elating patients and puzzling most experts.

The decision this week by more than 20 European countries to temporarily stop using AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine has opened a rift between vaccine safety experts, who say the cases of serious clotting and bleeding that triggered the pause are alarming and unusual, and public health officials concerned that the immunization pause on a continent in the grip of the pandemic’s third wave could take a heavy toll.

“The harm caused by depriving people of access to a vaccine will likely vastly outweigh even the worst case scenario if any link to the clotting disorders is eventually found,” University of Leeds virologist Stephen Griffin told the United Kingdom’s Science Media Centre. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the World Health Organization have recommended that countries continue immunizations while they investigate the reports.

When he announced this goal I didn't really know what to think of it because I didn't have even the slightest idea how realistic it was.

I am glad that the milestone has been reached.

This past week, I became eligible for the vaccine in my state! But, my car is broken. Soon as it's fixed, I'll sign up for a time slot.

Although, now that I think about it, I should also probably try the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as well. Once I have had all three then I will decide which one to go with.

You might want to be careful with that. I have it on good authority (best friend's sister's cousin's uncle's next-door neighbor's former roommate) that mixing your vaccines like that could cause you to sprout four more appendages and be able to spin webs.

I think, too, that he's trying to reassure his backbenchers, some of whom are becoming increasingly restive at the way the government is having to pursue the most un-Conservative of policies -- massive government regulation of business and everyday life, massive government spending on health care and subsidies to employers and the self-employed, with tax increases planned to pay for it -- that he's still the leader they thought they'd elected.

He is, of course, still that leader, utterly unencumbered by any sense of shame, political principle, or truthfulness, but that's not quite what they expected.

We've paid inadequate attention to the Brexity line about becoming more like Singapore. The economy of Singapore, like that of the other Asian and Pacific nations with which the Tories want to bring the UK into closer alignment, is very much a state-directed capitalist economy, and it's the kind of economy Rishi Sunak knows well, both from his previous (and very successful) career in finance, and through his father-in-law's business interests and background.

Under the shock of Brexit and Covid both, the government is, one way or another, going to have to intervene massively in the economy for the foreseeable future, just to keep things from collapsing, as are the governments of all other wealthy nations, anathema though that is to most British tories.

That's where we're headed, I think, post-Brexit, and some of Johnson's backbenchers ain't half going to get a shock when they find out.

In the meantime, he'll try his best to keep them lulled into a false sense of security.
