Senate Republicans, including those who do not plan to vote to convict former President Trump, say this week’s impeachment trial has effectively ended any chance of him becoming the GOP presidential nominee in 2024.

From the viewpoint of some Republican senators, the compelling case presented by House prosecutors carries a silver lining: It means they likely won’t have to worry about Trump running for president again in three years, while at the same time eroding his influence in party politics more generally.

In other words: the Democrats have made such an effective case against Trump, that there's no reason to convict him because 2024 ain't happening for him!

If they vote to acquit, even if he's convicted, then they need to still be politically destroyed.

So, if this is supposed to be theater, it is pretty bad theater. I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to start cackling today. Seriously, it was a nice bit of lightheartedness after the gravity of the rest of this week. I sincerely hope these three lying lawyers [one mentioning he didn't even know if he was under oath, but he was telling the truth unlike the House team, who were liar liars pants on fire.

And then the laughter aimed just at the woman of colour [I really am having a name issue, but I think she's brilliant], showing a high level of misogyny and racism on the part of most likely the GOP side of the aisle....

And I unfriended someone because as a last straw he showed his own racism and sexism when he bad mouthed her on FB. [Because while he wasn't overt, insulting her and making a nasty dig about how she not only was lying but managed to play the race card - well, yeh - and it was a last straw - for a supposed indie, he sure did spend a lot of time defending Der Gropenfuhrer and insulting and attacking dems the last few years.].

Tomorrow it's all over. I hope I can tell my mom 'I told you so' tomorrow night, since she won't even listen to why I think he'll be convicted, through no fault of most of the GOP, or at least, no courage.... not real brave to not show for the vote. But whether or not she's right, or I am, the gop is killing itself by their crass and cowardly behavior.

Provoking an extant mob to suddenly take unlawful action is bad enough.

INVITING a mob so that you can direct them to take unlawful action should be worse.

The prosecutors should have hammered on the fact he was instructing the mob to take imminent action to unlawfully STOP congress, not just to go down there and be heard. He gave them motive (Our Nation will be lost if you don't!). He gave them a goal (STOP congress!). He pointed them towards the capitol and they went.

And by their own words they were obeying an (unlawful) order (not an invitation) from their president.

In the latest surprising turn in Saturday’s proceedings, Raskin asked that a statement from Herrera Beutler be admitted into the record rather than calling her as a witness.
Hours earlier, Democrats had said they would like to take a deposition from Herrera Beutler after she described a conversation that McCarthy had with Trump while the Jan. 6 Capitol attack was ongoing.
The Senate had then voted to call witnesses.

Former President Donald Trump on Saturday was acquitted by the U.S. Senate of the charge that he incited the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6. The Senate needed two-thirds of the 100-member body to vote against Trump in order to convict him, but fell short of the 67-vote threshold with 57 members finding him guilty and 43 finding him not guilty.

Two more Republicans voted to convict than voted to start proceedings. It was a foregone conclusion, but this had more Republican support than I had hoped for.
