No I never roleplayed on AOL or Yahoo Gor, and have no idea what they were like. When I say Old Gor, I am speaking of independent HTML-chatroom sites with affiliated message-boards, often run by people with servers in their basements: Webmaze, Alterrealm, Chatropolis, ImagineChat, and many others which names I do not recall. Although our individual rooms were spread across several sites, it was a unified community of several thousand highly-dedicated roleplayers. The roleplay in the chatrooms was supported by webpages that described the roleplay-setting and rules, and discussion boards that helped people keep up on roleplay that they missed. We had elaborate combat-rules to guide judges in determining the outcome of roleplayed-combat.
For those who don't find the occasional kink of role play to be enough. Basically, these are people you probably don't want inviting you over for dinner. Unless you're into that.
Them I might consider giving a pass for "real time". Someone who thinks roleplaying on IRC counts as "old" anything? I met my wife in an online "tabletop" SFRPG on a dial-up BBS back when the Internet was still the ARPANET and BITNET and JaNET and Jarrko's clone of BITNET CHAT wasn't even a twinkle in his eye.
Y!M was around before the Y2K (the year, not the wrestler) panic. Yahoo Messenger let you create personal/private chat rooms up until mid 2005 when KPRC here in Houston reported that many of the user-created rooms were geared toward pedophillia. Yahoo took a big loss on advertising from it so you only had public rooms available. The end of 2012 saw the end of the public rooms as well.
There's one problem with this: If the Warriors are lifestylers, they can't come out to play because they're ALWAYS OUT PLAYING.
But only if they finished all their chores/homework and back home when the streetlights came on if it was a school night...
