Yes, but for those two to ten days during which someone is shedding the virus but is as yet asymptomatic, whether or not they wear a mask can make a big difference to how many people they infect before they know they're ill.
As long as you don't sneeze, cough or sing, the virus will not get further out of your mouth than 1 meter (a little over 3 feet). Hence: Distancing.

Our results so far: Showing the number of people hospitalized every day with covid-19:

IMHO: Our package of measurements works as good as those of our neighbors with mouth cap policies.

What people are always forgetting about non medical masks:

1. it prevents much of your stuff flying around when you are coughing
2. the virus enters the body via your mouth. Wearing a mask really prevents you from putting your fingers in your mouth quite well.
.

For what it’s worth, I did some research before risking meal delivery. My understanding is that it enters through nose and eyes, but maybe not mouth. Like, if virus was on your food and you ate it, it would not be delivered to lungs, but to digestive system, where it dies.

I suppose we are still figuring these things out.

Nose and mouth connect in the back of your mouth and use one pipe down for a few centimeters (number 2 in the drawing) before the two pipeline sections start (direction stomach and direction lungs). So one can be infected trough mouth and nose. It is best to reheat the food above 63C for at least 4 minutes.

It comes down to trusting the ones that prepared, packed and delivered your meal.
But that is always the case, not only now with the corona-thingy.

Edit to add: Note to myself, no more salads until further notice, only cooked or pealed veggies and fruit.

It always makes me laugh that Ayn Rand's heroine, her "self-made genius" inherited a railroad. So not only did she not build the business, but the railroads were built on land taken from Native American tribes by force, and financed by grants of cash and land to private companies from the government. Few industries have taken so much from others by sanctioned force. Maybe mining and oil come close. They all built industries on taking public goods and converting them into private profits.
Ayn Rand believed that native Americans (and Arabs) were "savages" trapped in a primitive state of existence and by nature part of the passive and ignorant collectivist masses.

Did you think her popularity among modern-day fascists was just a coincidence?

Useful for when I need to go shopping on the other side of the border, where they find this kind of protection mandatory to wear.
Hopefully it doesn't slide from my bald head.

Yes, but it's a matter of taking multiple precautions to minimise risk.

If someone is scrupulously observing all social distancing rules, and takes care always to cough or sneeze into a tissue or something, then their wearing a mask is a superfluous precaution, but not everyone can be relied upon to always to do at on all occasions, so it seems to me prudent to take additional precautions, such as wearing a mask, as a backup.

The virus' progression as it spreads is exponential, not linear, so any extra steps that can be taken to slow its transmission seem to me worth taking, at least if they involve so little inconvenience and expense as does wearing masks.

I made a bandana mask too but after 5 minutes of wearing it when I went shopping I took it off because I couldn't breath & walk thru the store at the same time. I think it was just too thick. Luckily my store had extra face masks behind one of the counters & gave me one that worked for me. I'm a regular shopper there so I think they wanted to keep me breathing. :)

P.S. to Sid - bald men are sexy. :)

Pretty grateful right now that I still had the mask I use for Burning Man and that my anxiety told me to stock up on filters.

In a Belgian online newspaper I saw a video on how to make a mask out of a sock. Very easy, you only need a pair of scissors and one sock.
I tried it. Breathing goes super.
But I don't think it will protect much, because socks are loosely woven.

When we would be talking about at least surgical masks, I would totally agree.
But these are reserved for medical use only here at the moment.
I know a Dutch site where I could order a box (delivered within 2 working days).... but since healthcare still has to struggle to keep up with supplies, I simply will not do that for the time being.

Something something something privileged Silicon Valley goobers.

Actually, stuff like that is not just 'nice to have'. It is an expense the company incurs in order to attract talent and try to win clients. It is being claimed on taxes somewhere. So employees have a legitimate question if they no longer have access to part of their benefits package.

Reason number 4096 why women tend to live longer than men.

A few fewer knuckledraggers with toxic levels of testosterone to contaminate the gene pool. These are likely the same guys with testicles hanging off the back of their pickups (modified to belch large amounts of soot from the exhaust), along with the stadium-sized American flag attached to the tailgate.
