Inflation is killing all over the world at the moment. In NL the inflation is 12% at the moment compared with September last year.
Vattenfall (one of the largest energy suppliers in NL) anounced another 50% (!!) increase of the energy costs for households.
People who don't have a long term energy contract are really screwed.

So a lot of people are forced to cut back on things to keep the ends meet in RL.
I guess the easiest way to save money, will be to cut back on entertainment, not so much on heating (upcoming winter) and eating.

I see a huge drop in sales in SL with my store over the last month. My guess it is all about RL money getting tight.
When people start to ditch their land holdings in SL because of the massive worldwide recession that is building up IMHO, it could be the end of that virtual world soon.
We all know that the land business is LL's bread and butter. The rest are relatively peanuts to keep the company in business.

Thoughts?

I will stick with SL as long as it lasts/as long as I still like it.
It is my first and my last virtual world that I invest time and effort in.
I will certainly not start something new at the moment.

As someone who works in media, even with the pandemic... People always need to be entertained to get their mind off things happening in RL. they will Cut back definitely and the grid will likely shrink. But i think your underestimating how addicting the Media Age is.

since it's all virtual land they can spin up and down as needed unless they are forced to/contracted have those servers on reserve. cost will go up and down with it.

As long as it doesn't drop to deficit levels and they suddenly can't keep employees... but if things do get that dire, i imagine there will be other issues to worry about.

as long as they do not go in like M did and just 250 jobs, still I'm not sure what even took place for that to happen.

LL will still be around in 2024 without doubt. The more interesting question is: how big will it be, and what will change on the journey until then?

You can still visit there.com . They are older than sl and apparently claim to be alive. Cristiano was an early member there.

The only real question as far as SLs life goes is how long can it continue with its Linden dollars? Otherwise it can continue with no heartbeat for a century.

LL could definitely scale back if needed.

I imagine provate regions pay for themselves, and with everything AWS or whatever now, if someone stops paying for a region, then the VM just goes away and is no longer an expense.

That basically leaves the expense of running mainland and places like Linden Homes.

I feel like if they needed to, they could basically forcibly relocate people a bit and trim down a lot if they wanted. I almost wonder if they need to in the Linden Homes area. It feels kind of deserted like the main land areas, except it looks prettier.

One of the fundamental flaws of SL is continents. Simulators must be running, even if there are no people on it. If they could be just fired up when somebody is on them/looking on them this would save tons of money, just like Kitely does.

Eh, yes and no.

One of the things I really really like about SL that makes it unique is that is has this continuous stretch of large land area. I honestly really hate instanced seperated regions.

I do think they need SOME syatem for moving plots or consolidating mainland. Especially with very very old and clearly abandoned builds. Even if its as simple as "Land Owner has not logged in in 2 years" and even if its "We move these parcels wholesale to a classic histroy exhibit area" or something.
