Why is Tech often named after something else?

There's also Tiny C, Small C, Objective C, and CO2 (C Object Oriented).
..and a sentimental favorite of mine: Let's C (*glances over at the paper manual I still have, sheds a tear for the long lost floppies*)

A lot of the time things are named for the sake of uniqueness. "project 1"? WHICH "project 1" -you know?

And marketing, of course -for the sake of standing out from the other products. Or to tickle the fancy of one of the owners (e.g. how the Altair got it's name)

Nobody I know ever called it "Lets C", it was always "The Mark Williams compiler". Turbo C was more like a different language but anyone who used the language extensions was a tosser, since unlike Turbo Pascal portable code mattered. There was also Whitesmith's C where they made it gratuitously different from K&R C to avoid imaginary copyright problems.

There was some debate as to whether the successor to C would be D or P, but it turns out the next languages to come out from Bell Labs would be Alef, Inferno, and Go. Then there's Java, Swift, and Rust to consider.

... Storage and programs on the internet? ...
SAPOTI is actually pretty easy to pronounce but I could see a long term debate if it were "Sah-pot-ee" (LoL "potty"! Deleting can be called flushing) or "Sah-poe-tye" or "Spot-eye" with a silent "A".
Kind of like Kodak. A non-word which could make it ubiquitous.

Though, I think Amazon missed the boat with S3. "Amazon Storage Service" would have hit harder. Imagine, "Just stick the files in your... " =^-^=

Speaking of ill fitting metaphors, why is the save button still a 3" floppy?

A coworker had to install a printer today on a desk that sits in front of a networked copier. The user can literally turn her chair 160 degrees and retrieve something printed to the copier without standing. They do that daily when other office users send things to the copier for them to file (or sometimes ha ha ha scan to their email ha ha ha so they can forward the document to someone else ha ha ha ha ha). So now there's a printer sitting on the desk, directly wired to the computer, for no reason.

This derail is brought to you by my mind thinking about the printer icon looking like an old dot matrix line printer, after reading the post above, then connecting that thought to the most current silly user news from today.
