The information that's coming out - like Epstein's emails - only make their efforts to block the release look more and more like a cover-up. And as with so many cover-ups it can be said that, whatever their motivations, the existence of people like a John Dean or Daniel Ellsberg are inevitable.

Perhaps the email revelations will inspire someone to save their sorry ass by being the hero.

Conservative host Megyn Kelly suggested that she did not initially believe Jeffrey Epstein was an "actual pedophile" because he reportedly victimized girls aged 15 and older.

Kelly spoke to journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon about Epstein on Wednesday after Democrats released emails suggesting President Donald Trump "knew about the girls" during his friendship with the pedophile. The conversation was first reported by Media Matters.

"I do know somebody very, very close to this case who is in a position to know virtually everything," Kelly explained. "And this person has told me from the start, years and years ago, that Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile."

If I understand the process correctly, we are a considerable distance from the release of the files.

Assuming the House petition passes, it then goes to the Senate. IF it passes the Senate, it goes to POTUS to sign or veto. "Veto" seems like a pretty good bet, so then it is back to the Senate to override the veto.

If what I read about this is correct, we seem to need a John Dean or Daniel Ellsberg to rise up and short-circuit the system.

Even then, stuff like the grand jury testimony can't readily be released, can it? And the FBI and various intelligence agencies must have a lot of material they won't want to hand over.

Trump's support for Israel hardly distinguishes him from other US presidents over the last 50 years, and given his white Evangelical supports for Israel and his closeness to wealthy and generous US donors, it doesn't really need anything else to explain it.

The policy on Israel has been fairly consistent with past administrations. If anything it is policy on Russia where Trump has been an outlier, but it is also the case that White Christian Nationalists have warmed to Putin's Russia because it is an authoritarian state with religious window dressing.

The tone is often jocular, sometimes vulgar, and always confident. The contents underscore the late sex offender’s efforts to leverage his relationships with high-profile contacts, many of whom continued the correspondence long after Epstein’s first conviction for sexual offences in 2008.

The release illustrates how Epstein coped with his growing notoriety through the 2010s, as legal cases were brought against him.

The US House Oversight Committee on Wednesday announced a massive document dump from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, including thousands of emails discussing a wide range of topics, including women, blackmail, and spending the holidays with Donald Trump.

The 20,000 documents come in the form of poorly organized folders with unhelpful labels, screenshots of emails, and heavily redacted spreadsheets. Some of the files are devoid of context, such as a video in the NATIVES folder of a dog playing with plushies of Trump and Hillary Clinton, while others are broken up in confusing ways, like email chains split into several PDFs.

I'm old enough to remember when, back in the 1980s, Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper (at the time, the best selling tabloid in the UK and a powerful pro-Thatcher political force) used to feature Sam Fox as a topless page 3 girl glamour model, starting when she was 16.

Imagine the shock of any Sun readers who might have kept a collection of old copies of the Sun when, in 2004, the Sexual Offences Act 2003 came into force, raising the definition of "a child" from under 16 to under 18 for the purposes of legislation prohibiting the possession of indecent images of children, thus turning them and the Sun readers of 20 years previously into the sort of evil perverted pedo scum that that the Sun so hates.

To my mind, there's a big problem with the way the term "pedophile" is used to identify a particular category of perverted being, hateful and contemptible, and completely different from "normal" people. Anyone who's worked in the criminal justice system knows that's not the case.

There are people who treat other people who have less power, agency or autonomy simply as objects to be used at their pleasure. It's about power, not sex, and sometimes it's illegal and sometimes not. British law goes some way towards recognising this by making it an offence, even though the normal age of consent is 16, for someone in a position of authority or responsibility (teacher, priest, doctor, youth worker, etc) to have sexual relations with one of their charges who is under 18, even though the relationship would be legal, though doubtless very undesirable, if they were an ordinary member of the public.

I'm not sure the underage girls who were raped, trafficked and prostituted by Epstein would be all that concerned with what you see as a problem. In a court of law, we can certainly deliberate what terminology is to be used. In the court of public opinion, I don't see how anyone regulates the language.
