Several House Republicans have reportedly heard from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein documents are especially compromising for President Donald Trump.

That's according to reporting from former MSNBC, CNN and Fox News reporter David Shuster, who posted to his X account on Wednesday that there is "speculation/rumors sweeping through [the] GOP caucus" about the details of the Epstein files.

"A few GOP house members say they’ve heard from FBI/DOJ contacts that the Epstein files (with copies in different agencies) are worse than Michael Wolff’s description of Epstein photos showing Trump with half naked teenage girls," Shuster wrote.

Shuster is likely referring to an October interview in which Trump biographer Michael Wolff told the Daily Beast that he had personally seen "about a dozen Polaroid snapshots" of Trump and Epstein, in which Trump was photographed with several topless young women on his lap. Wolff said Epstein pulled the photos out of a safe and spread them out "like a deck of cards" on his dining room table. The author told the Beast he saw the photos while visiting Epstein's home at the convicted sex offender's invitation, as Epstein wanted Wolff to write a book about him.

During the summer you might recall the FBI were forced to go through the Epstein files to flag every and all mentions of Trump in them. Allison Gill issued an offer to FBI personnel to contact her and talk about their work, completely off the record. Plenty of them were so sickened by this chore, they took her up on it.

Allison comes off somewhat low-key (one might say dour) in the video, but if I was discussing the stuff she covers here, I'd be stupefied to the point of paralysis.



If you can't (or won't) watch the video, I've pinched a summary of bullet points on it:

• It 's worse (and huger) than people expect.
• There are photos. Lots of photos. FBI staff had to view these photos. There are videos. FBI staff had to watch these videos. You may imagine the emotional and psychological toll involved.
• They first identified the Trump references in an Excel spreadsheet, which was both unwieldy and insecure. While this was going on, the number of people learning what others were seeing and tracking kept piling up.
• They (Patel? Bondi?) kept changing the requirements to their task, so they had to keep restarting the project.
• Kash Patel is a thoughtless asshole (surprise!).
• The shutdown stopped all freedom of information requests; Allison filed one on just how many people at the FBI were assigned to do this. Because right now, I don't think anybody is really sure how many.

Just to clarify, I was meaning to communicate something like "I don't want to get my hopes up, but of course would celebrate them being released." I'll also add that of course I'll keep doing anything I can to try to push for their release.

There's a problem with that, though.

The images (or many of them) were taken without the consent of the parties concerned and, depending on the age and circumstances of girls/young women concerned, show what may be consensual sexual acts, coerced sexual acts, or the sexual abuse of minors.

Without knowing the ages and circumstances of the girls and women it's impossible to say which, unless the girls are clearly under-age, but in any event publishing them without the consent of the girls and women (and the men, at least if all the parties were consenting adults) would certainly be all sorts of illegal in the UK and, I would hope, in the US too.

In the UK, and I speak with some professional experience of this, during the course of criminal investigations and prosecutions access to this kind of material by both investigators and litigators is highly restricted, and both sides will do all they can to avoid showing it to a jury.

Even though it would doubtless be highly embarrassing for Trump and the other men concerned, and rightly so, the victims' feelings and privacy should nevertheless be protected.
