That seems to be only Windows 11 Home. 11 Pro can use a local account.
And if you only have Home and decide to upgrade to Pro to avoid this...that'll be $99 USD.

I mean, until Windows 10 you had to pay at least that much to get the next Windows no matter what edition you had...

I got 10 Pro with my new PC, because it gives you more control over settings and stuff. And updates.
So if/when I accept the upgrade I assume it would be to 11 Pro. It better be,anyway.
My laptop, if it will run 11, was base by another custom company and only has 10 Home.
I have a Microsoft account anyway (I think I created it for the support forums), which is fortunate, because I'm not shelling out for Pro for that system.

Well I mean, I paid for the license of Windows sitting on my PC right now (I know because the manufacturer line itemed it on my bill), and it doesn't require a cloud login to set it up.

There are a lot of people that don't want to pay additional for installing another copy of Windows that won't force you to set up an online login. A lot of companies as well.

Personally I don't care about the Microsoft account bit. It integrates with One Drive and Office and Xbox and all that so it's fine by me.

Does it have an equivalent of Apple's Migration Assistant yet?

I got the blue dot in the Windows Update taskbar icon.

Do I dare?

... :hellokitty:
Your PC is new enough to have TPM turned on by default? Or have they been like that for a while, and I just haven't had to deal with it with my privately made PCs?
In any case, IIRC with the Windows 10 rollout they said you could backtrack if you want to, just don't delete the Windows.old folder.
I'd still wait til the first service pack, myself. At least, lol.

It's an HP laptop, about a year old. Yeah, HP tends to enable all the BIOS bells and whistles on their higher-end (but not specifically gaming) machines.

Despite the post, I plan to at least watch for some changes to 11's environment before I give into the upgrade. For example, I prefer my taskbar at the top of the display, which 11 wants to fight me on. (There's a way to set it through the Registry, but...)

I am interested in changes to WSL available in 11, specifically the WSLg architecture that provides Linux GUI app support through Wayland. It also, supposedly, can provide native access to your audio devices. I want to experiment with that, mostly to see if it lets one "easily" use a client like Mixxx or Internet DJ Console to stream music - for my purposes, into SL. But that one is purely for the fun of it.

Well personally Wayland is for me kind of a dead end. It has some nice ideas, but too much stuff cramped into a compisitor. It would have been better IMHO to still have some central component doing all peripheral stuff, not just libinput.

Thanks to Rufus, I'm running windows 11 ...until MS nukes it in an update, at least.

I have to admit it's pretty neat being able to run Linux desktop apps in Windows -would be neater if there was anything in Linux's desktop that doesn't already have a Windows port, of course.

Yeah, it's neat, though the only thing I really use it for is CLI stuff, since I prefer the Linux terminal to DOS or PowerShell.

Honestly, mostly because I am more familiar with it.

So what's the verdict? Anything worthwhile besides the Linux apps?

A lot of cosmetic changes mostly.

I think they're worthwhile -at least for me. They've changed around the ribbon interface on their filemanager and a bit on the right-click menu but nothing really drastic. The fonts and windows are smoother and easier on the eyes. It's easier to make new virtual desktops and switch between them -there's a widget on the taskbar that does it. The way it organizes notifications has been cleaned up and it seems easier to get rid of old ones than it was before. The start menu is strange to me (now) because it's been tablet-ified; meaning that you have a group of icons (default or ones you've "pinned" onto the start menu) but if you start typing the name of a program it comes up -I'm not sure if that's easier or harder. I'm a touch typist so it works out just fine for me.

The only real headache I've noticed is that I got an error installing vmware player -I forget what that was all about and it installed anyway.

I actually don't mind the way it's integrated into their online stuff since I have an office 365 home subscription; but I'm aware of the privacy implications. Since I don't mind it, I appreciate the way it seems to be more smoothly integrated into Windows 11 although it might be I simply didn't notice it in 10.

I like it better, and I'll legitimately miss it if an update forces me back into using Windows 10.

Nothing that I've seen. I just got the Do you want Windows 11 prompt and said no.
Oh, I still don't plan on installing until the first service pack at least, and maybe only then if it does something I particularly need.
"Easier on the eyes", as Monica says, is good, but not enough on its own for me to rush into it.
I also need to hear from other musicians if it plays nicely with the music software.
I'll be keeping an eye on this and what people think of it in general.

My PC does everything I use it for with Windows 10.
Microsoft said I need to do something about TPM before I can get Windows 11.
To be honest I have no clue what that TPM is and where it sits (I guess in the BIOS) or what it does or if I have it.

Over the years I learned to never try to fix something that isn't broken, so I stay on Windows 10 as long as I don't have the feeling that I miss out on something or the PC needs professional maintenance.
