I went to that video on YouTube just so I could click 'dislike'. My system is capable of running it (if I flip the switch in the BOIS, but so far I don't see a train to run it until I absolutely have to.
Their sticking to their hardware floor (and arrogant manner of doing so) makes me wonder what other nanny "features" they've got in there. They do not know what is best for my device. "Today's workplace" does not apply.

Windows Services for UNIX/Linux has been available in various forms on the more "pro" Windows versions since the '90s. It was originally a third party product called "Open NT". Microsoft just had to flip a bit to make the latest remake available to everyone.

Interix/SFU/SUA is a lightweight subsystem, replacing only the userspace Win32 layer with something like a Unix libc – even though there is a "subsystem driver" (psxss) for certain tasks, it still uses Windows PE (.exe) executables, the libc still uses NT kernel syscalls, Interix processes look almost entirely like Win32 or native processes, and they have the same filesystem access.

That is very primitive compared to running a full Ubuntu installation under windows. Much more was involved than flipping a bit.

In comparison, WSL is much more extensive than even SUA – the Lxss driver reimplements Linux kernel syscalls rather than userspace library functions, and can run unmodified ELF binaries (the default WSL system is stock Ubuntu). The WSL environment is mostly self-contained and is practically a "User-mode Linux" virtual machine, with very little interaction with the host OS. Although WSL processes show up in the shared process tree, you can't just run /bin/sh directly – you have to boot the entire WSL system, which is done by bash.exe behind the scenes.

I have to say, for possibly the first time, I am feeling incredibly leery about a new Windows version the more I hear about it.

It seems like they are going all in on just gutting a lot of old legacy things, almost too aggressively. It also feels like they are finally really pushing a lot more lock in mechanics that people feared from 8 and then 10 (that never really manifested).

It's kind of worrying as well because Microsoft has been getting increasingly open with Windows 10 and their software in general, this all feels like a huge leap backwards.

The logic behind it feels fishy as well. It feels like it's being done mostly to please PC manufacturers, who basically want to get on the imaginary "upgrade every 2 years" cycle they pretend the world has, and that phones pretend they have. I mean sure there are some that do, but most people run their stuff until it dies, which is more like 5-10+ years. Either from the cost or just a lack of need for anything new.

This feels especially shitty right now with all the chipmshortages, since it's impossible to get things affordably.

The music software I need to use wouldn't run on it, especially virtual instruments. No Linux versions.

It's worth noting that WSL2 is closer to a virtual machine than it is to a subsystem.

Yeh, that's where "various forms" comes in. The original version actually came out when Microsoft was still actively doing things with subsystems, before they brought GDI back into the kernel and kind of made sybsystems irrelevant.

Like I said it's had a number of incarnations. The "flipping a bit" was making the current version available to everyone. They could have done that 20 years ago but UNIX was still a virus back then.

Also, in may ways just running a VM is much more brute force and primitive than actually extending the POSIX subsystem into something that's actually useful. The original design was more like Jails or Containers, like a lightsaber instead of the VM blaster.

Same, to be honest. That's the main reason I'm keeping Linux as an option -if MS wants to go down that road I'll just save until I can hoard 2 or 3 cheap pcs, give up VWs and let them (MS, AMD, Intel) hang themselves.

I technically don't qualify for Win 11 due to no AMD bulldozer support, but given my luck it might try to update anyways... after all it is MS programmers we are talking about.

As far as using Windows games on Linux in a non-Steam environment .... There's Lutris, which can be used with "system wide" installs of Proton (and the varied user alterations, such a Glorious Eggroll's build).

While it takes a little more for some setup as opposed to Steam, Lutris is still a good alternative for those looking at Linux.

Disclosure: I have Lutris installed but have not really used it for much of anything as of yet - all of my own games are Steam bound.
