off-topic, but to explain

Flood control is an important issue for the Netherlands, as due to its low elevation, approximately two thirds of its area is vulnerable to flooding, while the country is densely populated. Natural sand dunes and constructed dikes, dams, and floodgates provide defense against storm surges from the sea

Hansje Brinkers ..... is a cult figure from Dutch mythology sponsored by the Tourist Board. According to the legend, he saved the nation from drowning in ancient times by sticking his index finger in a hole in the dike until the dike warden and his men came with sandbags.
Hansje Brinker became well known in the U.S. because of an American novel for children from Mary Mapes Dodge written in 1866: Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates.

I remember we read an account of the 1953 flood in grade school (late 60's). It wasn't the boy in the dike story either, but of a family surviving it and all that happened around them. It was probably fictional and watered down for children, but it was certainly representational.

How is it that I have no idea about this? Can you explain it please?

lol Trump's lead in Georgia is down to 9,500. Dare I hope?

Down to 79,000 in PA.

North Carolina still isn't saying a darn thing one way or the other.

Nevada is on my s-list. By November 12? They don't have freaking millions of ballots to count like PA and GA did, and both of those states busted their asses counting and are getting it done in like 3 days, maybe 4; but Nevada needs another whole week to count like a couple hundred thou tops? Nuts. I'm tempted to think the state government there is just too scared that some gunny Trumpers will terrorist if they release enough numbers to get players calling Nevada so they're just wishing on a star that PA or GA takes the fall for putting Biden over the line.

Biden has taken about 65% of the votes counted on Georgia the last 2 1/2 hours. If that trend continues we're talking about a margin of a few thousand or even a few hundred votes in either direction. Be prepared for a recount.

Interestingly, Biden has won almost 150% of the votes counted the last 2 1/2 hours in Pennsylvania. AP estimated that there were 912,000 votes left to count and Trump was ahead by 266,654. Now there are 856,000 left to count and Trump is ahead by 192,385. I suppose the explanation is that AP got the total number of votes wrong at first but it certainly means that the race there is still wide open.

Edit - Pennsylvania update:
Since I posted this, 0 more votes have been counted in Pennsylvania and Biden has won 1396 of them. That's a rather impressive ∞%. :p
I listened to the PA Secretary of State's press conference just now. Some of the discrepancies are from the counties and precincts not being good with technology, and putting the numbers in the wrong places on spreadsheets and such. Those eventually get straightened out. As far as absentee counts, mail ballots can arrive till 6pm tomorrow as long as postmarked by election day, and they are doing the late arrivals last. There could be post office pallets with ballots they haven't even counted to see how many there are. All this stuff is why elections are not certified until a few weeks after election day. That gives them time to process everything, and then double and triple check the results.

I live in Georgia, and it's a nail-biter. We are fairly likely to have a recount because the presidential margin is 0.2% and falling. Also *both* our US Senate races will go to runoffs on Jan 10th I think. So control of the Senate may be up in the air until after the new Congress is seated.

How the 2 candidates have been acting the past few days is all you need to know. Biden is acting presidential and urging calm. Meanwhile donnie is trying to stop everything and starting lawsuits his own team can not think of a justification for.

Then there is him wanting a recount when he is 20k behend. Nobody expects that will change the outcome but it will delay him conceding that state.

My mom's dad's family settled in Chicago from Poland - then at some point most of them went to San Diego - except one of my mom's cousins who went back to Minnesota [prolly missed the cold].
The German side of my family settled in Chicago, the Norwegian side settled in Minnesota. In the end the two kind of melded into Minnesota.

I'm actually starting to enjoy this close result and slow decline of Trump's reign.

It's basically the electoral equivalent of roasting Trump alive.

And it's entirely his own fault.

If we are really talking about it, I should hit Norway as that is where my ancestors are from...explains why they settled in a frigid part of the country, explains the hockey and uncrowded areas. :)
Actually Norway is still exposed to the Gulf stream, so noticeably warmer than Sweden or Finland during the year.

Something is afoot there, some kind of fuckery.

I think I remember reading that Nevada is hampered by the fact they can't announce a result until one candidate has so many counted ballots that he's clearly won, no matter what the as-yet-uncounted ballots are like.

Since they have quite a window for accepting postal ballots that have been delayed in the mail, this means they don't yet know how many uncounted ballots there are, so until the deadline they have to assume all the postal ballots they sent out may yet arrive in time to be counted.
