I had to flee the US – as a foreign, Black, pro-Palestinian activist, I tick every box on Ice’s list

Things began to fall apart after I attended a pro-Palestine protest on campus in September last year. We had brought a job fair to a standstill – because it featured booths from Boeing and L3Harris, companies that supplied Israel with the armaments it needed to carry out its genocidal campaign in Gaza. Although I was there for just five minutes, I was subsequently banned from campus, a punishment that felt like a kind of house arrest because my home was on the university’s Ithaca campus in upstate New York. While I could continue living there, I was barred from entering the university premises.

In January, as Donald Trump steamrolled into office brandishing an arsenal of executive orders targeting non-citizen student protesters, I left my home and went into hiding at the remote home of a professor, fearing the reach of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice). Three months later, I self-deported to Canada, then flew to Switzerland. I was prompted to flee after a friend, who had spent time with me in Ithaca, was detained at a Florida airport – on the other side of the country – and questioned about my whereabouts. I did not return to the UK as reports that pro-Palestine journalists had been arrested there made me fearful.

I hoped my arrival in Switzerland would mark the end of my ordeal. But two weeks in, two distressing emails reached my inbox. The first was from Cornell, informing me that the US government had effectively terminated my student visa status. The second came from Google, informing me that it had “received and responded to legal process” and handed my data to the Department of Homeland Security. These emails arrived 90 minutes apart.

Can you trace your US ancestry back to the 1870s? If not, some people would like to send ICE after you.

Well then I may be toast! I think most of my ancestors came over from Europe in the early 1900's with a few more fleeing WWII. I'm pretty sure a giant portion of our population can't pass that test.

Well, there goes most of Minnesota and Wisconsin. To be complete, take it back to 1848 so you can kick out the German democracy radicals as well. Long live the Kaisserreich!

Will we have to goose step?

Only the 1870's? Noobs!

And I am a Noob compared to the descendants of the people that came across the Bering land bridge during one of the ice ages. If anything they should be deporting all us “heritage americans“ back to the UK and Europe

Let's take this to it's logical conclusion, and everyone has to move back to Africa.

...no wait, we can go back further! Everyone must return to the sea!

They might want to be careful with this. Trump's mother Mary only became a U.S. citizen in 1942.

Washington, D.C. residents say they’ve seen enough — and they’re taking matters into their own hands.

A new grassroots movement is sweeping the capital, marking locations where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have allegedly detained undocumented people. The signs, posted on telephone poles and fences, are direct and defiant: “ICE ABDUCTED SOMEONE HERE,” followed by a date, time, and a plea for others to share what they’ve witnessed.
ETA: bah. Stupid removed posts on Reddit. I was linking to this here: ‘ICE Kidnapping’ Signs Are Popping Up Around D.C. —And the White House Is Freaking Out

The son answered the door and, while he permitted the agents to search his home, claiming he had nothing to hide, he asked if they could wait first while he put the family dog, Chop, a Rottweiler, away in the bathroom before they walked in, as the dog could be aggressive.

Border Patrol agents then asked the son if he could show them some identification.

According to the family, it is at this point that the son went to his pickup truck to retrieve his ID and a Border Patrol agent entered the home and, as a result, ended up shooting the dog.

The family stressed that the agents knew-- the son had told them-- that Chop was put in the bathroom for their safety and that the agents opened the door, let Chop out and shot him.

Fucking maniacal ghouls.

He was wrongfully imprisoned for 43 years. Moments after being released, ICE took him
On the morning of Oct. 3, 2025, Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam walked out of Huntingdon State Correctional Institution, the Pennsylvania prison that had confined him for more than four decades. The 64-year-old had spent nearly his entire adult life behind bars for a murder he did not commit. His conviction had been vacated weeks earlier after a court found that prosecutors had concealed evidence that would have dismantled the state’s case. The Centre County district attorney formally withdrew all charges a day before his expected release.

But Subu never made it home.
As he stood on the threshold of freedom, officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were waiting. Acting on a decades-old deportation order, they detained him and transferred him to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center, an ICE detention facility in central Pennsylvania.

Exclusive: ICE, Border Patrol agents to receive pay during government shutdown

WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has promised tens of thousands of federal agents carrying out his immigration crackdown that they will be paid during the government shutdown, according to emails seen by Reuters, even as other federal workers go without pay.
The pay plan was communicated to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff on Wednesday in separate internal emails seen by Reuters.
