These incidents are becoming so common now, that they deserve their own thread.

I was a British tourist trying to leave America. Then I was detained, shackled and sent to an immigration detention centre | US immigration | The Guardian

[Becky] has emerged from the experience with new eyes. “I was naive to think that what was going on in the world, or at the border, wouldn’t affect me,” she tells me, her arms folded across her chest. She had believed if she was honest and acted in good faith she would be insulated from harm, but now thinks that might have been naive, too. “If I’d lied, I’d be on holiday in Canada right now.”

This is horrifying. I can't imagine that happening to someone just traveling.
From the article
There were other tourists, too. Bana, from Romania, was on holiday in Canada and visited Peace Arch park, on the international boundary between the US and Canada. She told Becky she had been taking selfies with her husband when a US border official told her they had strayed into American territory without the right visa and took her into custody.

Peace Arch Park, where I've attended Hands Across the Border as a Scout.

"The monument and surrounding park is considered an international park. As such, visitors do not require either a passport or visa to pass through their applicable border crossing so long as they stay within the boundaries of the park and leave the park into the country from which they entered the park "

Within the Arch itself are two statements.

"Children of a common mother."

"May these gates never be closed."

Just got a text. My brother and sil have just returned to Canada (BC border) a few months early. My brother was having anxiety issues, and my sil, even though she now has citizenship, she’s from France and was working long distance from her computer (editing) and also all the paperwork and changes to visas and such… anyway, they’re back. Yay!

Here she is at the border (I don’t think she’ll mind me sharing). She said that when they mentioned how glad and relieved they were to be back home (Canada) the agent said that everyone was saying the same thing.

Yup tourist industry will be booming in the USA the next couple of years.
"Now all trips from abroad with possible free unplanned excursions to certain places where one normally never gets!"

It really makes me sad that at this point I'd strongly discourage any foreign friends from coming here. We have NOTHING worth the risk.

A tattoo belonging to a man from Derbyshire has appeared in a US government document used to identify members of a notorious Venezuelan gang - despite the man having no connection to the group.

Pete Belton, 44, from Ilkeston says he was shocked to find his forearm featured in a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) document used to help identify alleged members of Tren de Aragua (TdA), a transnational criminal organisation.
"I'm just an average middle-aged man from Derbyshire," he told BBC Verify.

Mr Belton said it was a "bit strange, bit funny at first" but is now worried the family trip he booked to Miami with his wife and daughter in August might end up "being a six month all-inclusive holiday to Guantanamo".

Back in the 80s a lot of consultants made money telling local police that punks could be identified as gang members based on the band logos on the back of their jackets. I always hoped my Art of Noise jacket confused the hell out of them, not to mention my Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians vest.

Yeah I don't feel like this is just ignorant fuddy-duddies panicking about young people with tattoos and assuming they're all gang related; I'm pretty sure this is a fully conscious and intentional lie by DHS in order to set up any tattoos whatsoever as grounds to expel any non-white immigrant as a "gang member".
