Time's Brian Bennett is asking the question: why attack Iran now?

According to three senior Trump administration officials part of the reason is Trump's view that negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program had become a fruitless exercise. Trump came to believe that Iran was using games, tricks and stall tactics after Kushner described what had happened during the most recent round of talks on thursday. Trump didn't believe that Iranians were serious about giving up its ambition to develop nuclear weapons and seemed to be misrepresenting the extent of its enrichment capabilitiies.

Additionally Trump was frustrated that Iran refused to discuss its continued construction of ballistic missiles and its support for violent proxy forces in the Middle East. Trump also believed that Iran is busy rebuilding its nuclear enrichment capabilities.

Trump recently was briefed that Iran intended to use its ballistic missile arsenal potentially preemptively against American forces in the region. That with the conclusion that diplomacy is futile convinced Trump to go for the attack.

Other explanations ciculating right now: Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salmon convinced Trump over the past month to attack Iran.

Another explanation is that Trump is quite weak in America right now, and Epstein was becoming to burdensome so he had to do something to divert the attraction of both away.

The Associated Press is being shockingly quiet about any immediate fallout from the attack on Iran. I'm digging around for some more vocal news sources.

Trump had a phone interview with the Daily Mail about how long this war will take: 'It's always been a four week process. We figured it will be four weeks or so. It's always been about a four week process so - as strong as it is, it's a big country, it'll take four weeks - or less,' the President explained.

He said he hasn't been surprised by any of the outcomes of the strikes thus far.

The President remained open to more talks with the Iranians, but couldn't say if they would happen 'soon.'
'I don't know,' he answered. 'They want to, they want to talk, but I said you should have talked last week not this week.'

I dunno, but it's plausible. SA is certainly happy that it's happening.

Scores of mosques in Australia (!) are mourning the death of Khamenei:

“We offer our condolences and congratulations to the presence of Imam Mahdi (may our souls be sacrificed for him), the Islamic Ummah, the esteemed religious authorities and scholars, and the great nation of Iran on the honorable martyrdom of the pious scholar, the foremost martyr of the Islamic Revolution, and the rightful deputy of the Imam of the Age, Ayatollah Khamenei, in the blessed month of Ramadan,” it said.

Arrahman Islamic Centre in Sydney held a mourning gathering for the “pure soul” of Khamenei and "for the souls of the martyrs who rose in the face of the American-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The Flagbearer Foundation in North South Wales referred to Khamenei as “the Imam of Our Time” and will hold three nights of recitations for him.

Husaineyat Sayeda Zaynab in NSW, Al Zahra Mosque in Sydney, Taha Association, Hossaini Society Community Centre, and Muhammad Rasulallah Islamic Centre all held similar services.

Hossaini eulogized the Ayatollah as “a towering leader of faith, resistance, and unwavering devotion to Islam and humanity.”

"Australia has imported a major problem,” said the Australian Jewish Association.

“Mosques across Australia are holding mourning vigils for the brutal murderer Ayatollah. If the government doesn’t take action, Australians can only blame ourselves.”

Of course Hamas mourns the death as well. No surprise.

Hamas on Sunday mourned Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei, a firm supporter of the Palestinian movement, after his death in what it described as a "heinous" US-Israeli attack.

"We in Hamas mourn the passing of Ali Khamenei. He provided all forms of political, diplomatic and military support to our people, our cause, and our resistance," it said in a statement.

"The US and the fascist occupation government bear full responsibility for this blatant aggression and heinous crime against the sovereignty of Iran, as well as for its serious repercussions on the security and stability of the region."

Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, described Khamenei as the "main supporter of the Resistance Axis and its mujahideen".

"All the support the Islamic Republic has provided over decades to our people and our resistance ... was delivered by his direct decision and under his full supervision," the Brigades said in a separate statement.

"This substantial support has been a key factor in the development of the resistance and its tactics, culminating in the remarkable achievements" during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, the group added.

Armed group Islamic Jihad, which along with Hamas and its armed wing fought a war against Israel in Gaza for two years, said the killing of Khamenei was a "war crime" by the US and Israel in a "treacherous and malicious attack".

Just one in four Americans supports US strikes on Iran, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds
Only one in four Americans approves of the U.S. strikes that killed Iran’s leader, while about half — including one in four Republicans — believe President Donald Trump is too willing to use military force, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded on Sunday.

Some 27% of respondents said they approved of the strikes, while 43% disapproved and 29% were not sure. About nine in 10 respondents said they had heard at least a little about the strikes, which began early on Saturday.
That's hitting the Crazification Factor. I don't think it can go much lower without breaking reality.

Now that France has been indirectly attacked and the UK capitulated to let the US use UK bases, I think we are potentially literally in the opening days of WW3. I don't say that with any hyperbole. Iran is going scorched earth and I don't blame them one bit. They are taking all of the Middle East down with them. This is all on Netanyahu and Trump. Others have to die for their blood lust. I have the definitive answer to my thread about Israel becoming the monster.

The Trump administration had been lying with Iran planning to attack first: Pentagon briefers confirmed to congressional staff in a briefing Sunday that Iran was not planning to attack US forces or bases unless Israel attacks first.

This is important, because Trump justified the sudden attacks with Iran's will to attack US armed forces soon.
