Mark Joseph Stern: This was, in many ways, a huge defeat for Donald Trump. He had asked the Supreme Court in a rather extraordinary order to freeze the sentencing. And on Thursday night, by a 5–4 vote, the Supreme Court refused to do so, with Chief Justice John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett joining the three liberals. Presumably, Justice Samuel Alito harangued them behind the scenes and screamed at the top of his lungs that they were betraying their God-Emperor.
