Or maybe someone from the past few decades. These people only look past Reagan when it suits them.

Well, yes, there is the problem that US conservatives are nothing much like conservatives anywhere else, which is fortunate for the rest of us, I guess.

As Gore Vidal put it, back at the time "the new right" were getting started and someone asked him what he thought of Jerry Falwell setting up Liberty University, "No true Virginian would ever admit to being a 'new' anything."

That was true of England then, and I hope it's true of the US today (though Burke would have said this is republican revolutions invariably end with mobs storming the legislature and trying to lynch people or guillotine them, but he was a Tory).

I’ve just finished Jesse Norman’s biography of the eighteenth century politician and philosopher Edmund Burke, so that’s where I’ll turn for this week’s dose of historical miscellany.

While Burke didn't support the American independence, he did support the colonists resisting acts that infringed on their rights as Englishmen (and was strongly opposed to the French revolution, as it appealed not to established rights under the law but universal rights of humanity). Many of the framers of the Constitution were politically not that far from Burke, and his views on Representative government would line up with the intentions of the Constitution.

Modern Republicans like to appeal to popular will when it suits them and to the independent role of representatives when they want to do something unpopular, although many times as in this case, they present the unpopular opinion as the true will of the people (noting here that they further claim Toomey should represent the Republican Party "and the people of Pennsylvania").

Part of the difference between American and British conservatives is because at the conclusion of the Revolution, the most prominent Torys left or were driven out and we developed new parties, initially first along the lines of Federalists and anti-Federalist, both of which had a broad coalition instead of a strict ideological base. Our Conservatives are a reaction to the Progressives of the late 19th century, not rooted in a deeper tradition.

The democratic party takes domestic terrorism seriously. The problem is that q-anon (which seem so obviously the result of foreign/private psy-ops) has radicalized and conscripted -so-many-, most of whom are law abiding regular citizens who are sympathetic and supportive of the insurrectionists. So dems should do what? Suspend the 1st and 2nd amendment and go round them up too? You can vanish all the bad ones, and more will rise from the ranks to replace them, justifiably angry about their predecessors being 'taken down by a hostile government'.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) on Thursday accused Republican Party leaders of participating in “cancel culture” by censuring GOP senators who voted to convict former President Donald Trump of charges that he had incited an insurrection.

“There was a strong case made,” Thune said of the arguments put forward last week by House impeachment managers during an AP interview Thursday. “People could come to different conclusions. If we’re going to criticize the media and the left for cancel culture, we can’t be doing that ourselves.”

The cancel culture trope was a favorite of Trump lawyers — and Michael van der Veen in particular — who repeatedly made the claim that their client was being cancelled.
