Facebook Messenger also requires an app on phones. Unless you know how to check "Load desktop site."

Yes but unlike Threads you can just go to facebook on a pc to use it. There isn't a way to use threads on a pc.

Not sure what this says about Twitter's current employee base. Maybe Musk ran out all the smarter ones.

Ever since Meta launched its competitor to Twitter last week, Elon Musk has been attempting to tear it down, denouncing Threads’ approach to content moderation, threatening to sue for the supposed theft of “trade secrets,” and even challenging Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to a penis-measuring competition.

Some of his employees, however, are thoroughly enjoying the new app.

“I’m going to get fired for this, but I work at Twitter right now and have never really used it. Threads is just better,” a current staffer wrote on Threads last week. “Here’s to a new world!”

This is...interesting?

Meta’s embrace of ActivityPub, used by apps including the Twitter-like Mastodon, was bound to be a little awkward. The constellation of small apps and personal servers that currently use the protocol, known as the Fediverse, is marked by an ethos of sharing and openness, not profit-seeking or user bases denominated in the billions.

ActivityPub is designed to allow users of different apps to not only interact and view each others’ content, but also move their digital identity from one service to another. Mastodon, the largest app in the Fediverse, is open source and run by a nonprofit, and smaller Fediverse apps like PeerTube and Lemmy are often held up as a repudiation of the closed nature of services such as YouTube or Reddit. Corporations like Meta are typically held up as the enemy. No surprise that, despite appeals from ActivityPub leaders for civility when Meta arrived on the listserv, some couldn’t hold their tongue.

I get a weird vibe off of this, similar to when AOL (and other "online" services) users were unleashed on USENET.

I was on Facebook and Twitter. I didn't like them. I don't think that algorithms should decide what is good for me and what not.
Wading through tons of bogus and fake news.... no thanks. So I canceled both and now I live happily ever after without social media.
It is so relaxing not to read them any longer.

I don't think I will join another one any time soon,
See....this is why Google+ needed to become a thing and actually popular so we wouldn't have to choose between Zuck and Musk.
/me collapses into a fetal position in a corner and cries.

All free as in free beer.

All free as in freedom.

All open-source.

None owned by a corporation or any other for-profit.

None backed by venture capital.

All decentralised. Lots and lots of instances with individual owners strewn across the planet, including even outside the USA.

And none with a secret-sauce algorithm that forces weird shit upon you that you don't want to see because you don't want to see it.

There's a social networking world outside American megacorporations, in case you didn't know.

I never used google+. With google's regular search engine, it used to be putting a + before a word meant it was required to be in the result. Then google+ came along with their +usernames. So they changed the search to allow that and require double quotes around a single word to mean a required word. If there were quotes around a phrase it meant a required phrase. So that is what google+ meant to me, an annoyance in searching for things.
Google+ also didn't have an API for the longest time. When meant all the social i fluencer blogger types at the time couldn't automate their workflor and just crosspost everything with Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc.
Funny how literally nobody knows that Google+ is a 98% Diaspora* ripoff, from the design (Google stole the whole "black menu bar at the top" shtick from Diaspora*) to "circles" (Diaspora* claims to have had them first, named "aspects"; Friendica actually had them first, named "groups").

The 2% missing are that Diaspora* is decentralised whereas Google+ was a centralised walled-garden silo.

Thank you! One more reason to NEVER EVER OWN A CELLPHONE.
Try having one that isn't an iPhone and doesn't come with Google Play shit either.

They exist. I've got one. It works.

I would rather see hashtag support on Threads first honestly.

Truth Social is based on Mastodon. It doesn't communicate with other servers though.
Truth Social is Mastodons GPL-licensed source code, copy-pasted and illegally re-licensed as proprietary, non-free, copyrighted and closed-source because "WE GOTS THEM THAR MILLION-DOLLAR LAWYERS, AND Y'ALL OPEN-SOURCE COMMIES DON'T GOTS NO SHIT!"

From what I've read the source code is available on their site after being threatened with legal action. I haven't gone looking for it though.

Since you are new, I'll say it once. I do NOT WANT a smartphone/cellphone. I really have no use for one other than emergency.

Threads keeps chasing the Xwitter tail. Now you can do polls! And post gifs! It's the Web 2.0...

Meta is going to let you make polls and insert GIFs right from the Threads post composer, the company announced on Thursday. Later in the day, Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed that the company is testing view counts on Threads posts and pinned posts on profiles and in your replies.

The polls and GIFs features are now rolling out, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated by making a post with a GIF and another post with a poll. They’re small additions, but they’re features you have been able to do on X (formerly Twitter) for a very long time.

At the time I was perma-booted off of Twitter earlier this year, the site was already a stew pot of toxic sludge. I can't imagine it's gotten any better since then. Threads, though lacking some of Twitter's features, is a complete breath of fresh air.

It's owned by Facebook Meta, of course they're going to add ads to it.

Threads spotted exploring ads, but says ‘no immediate timeline’ toward monetization
Instagram says it’s not testing ads in Threads and has no immediate plans to monetize after multiple developers and reverse engineers uncovered references to ad products in the app’s code, including the word “ads” itself, as well as references to sponsored items and ads configuration.

A JSON file that developers used, presumably for testing purposes, was also discovered in the public-facing Threads mobile app.

As Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in April, Meta “definitely” plans to bring ads to Threads. “I get why people have concerns, but at the end of the day we’re a business and Threads needs to make enough money to pay for the people and servers that it takes to run the service and provide it to people for free,” he noted in a Threads post.
lol. Last year Meta cleared $39 billion after expenditures, and it just laid off a shipload of people. Threads is also definitely selling its users' personal data already. It already makes more than enough money to afford the people and the servers.

Is anyone using threads? My Instagram messages are mostly thread announcements. But I suspect my threads feed will be full of third copies of posts I’ve already seen on Facebook and Instagram.

Can anyone confirm or deny? Am I missing anything? Whachallthink?

I gave up on Threads pretty early. For a verity of reasons.

- I hate that everything is algorithm only.

- I hate that if I want images, I need to go there instead of Instagram, because IG wants to be TikTok.

- I stopped using IG over this basically too.

- I barely use Facebook, also because like IG and Threads, it's too much algorithm feed.

- Basically, I dislike Facebook as a company.
